Drilling hole through tile

I can’t think of anything worse right now.
Just trying to get a new shower curtain rod in there that curves out. I’ve got some rock carbide tip drill bits and I’m making snails pace progress. Spent one hour doing one.
Any tips for making this go easier?
Currently using a dewalt cordless drill.

are you using cutting fluid?

Not using cutting fluid. Just water to cool the bit

Haven’t drilled tile, but when I cut it I use a wet saw blade. So maybe you need some water on there.

roto-hammer, but can crack tile

Not all bits are the same. Buy a good one.

seems like a possibility you might be overheating your bits
you could consider switching to diamond or (if it is the problem) dispensing the lubricant more efficiently

5/16”
Is that the ultimate size hole you need or are you starting small and increasing once you get a pilot hole done? If 5/16 is the size you need, I would recommend a smaller hole first. But I’m certainly no expert.

Lightly tap the area where you are going to drill with a nail punch to chip the glaze then use a masonry bit.

5/16 is ultimate hole size. This is stupid

you need a diamond tip drill bit for that, carbide tip isnt gonna do it, you just going to crack it
when cutting or drilling tiles only stuff with diamonds cuts that shite
but with that said, its a damn shower curtain and rod, simple double stuck foam tape or silicone adheasive is all you need to secure it and no drilling is required

I drill holes in masonry, tile, granite, quartz, marble, etc. fairly often. There are carbide hole saws that work for larger holes but for anything 1" or less you need to get a diamond bit. Stop using whatever you are using now, go to Home Depot and pickup whatever size you need in a Milwaukee Diamond Plus holesaw. They work very well but you need to be able to apply (or have someone help you) a trickle of water while cutting at slow to moderate drill speeds with very light pressure. These bits need to do the cutting on their own and as long as you flush out the swarf with a little water they will make short work of any tile.

May God have mercy on your soul. I have a POS b&d power drill and though....hmm lemme throw up a shelf in my shower having no idea what I was in for. I'll skip ahead and say it took renting a high power mega drill from HD, 2 days, and 3 broken drill bits before I got all 8 holes drilled. I was using water to cool it every 10 seconds or so...heat still ate through those bitches like it was nothing. Enjoy

Place masking tape on the wall and use a hamerdrill (sds) with a masonry bit on the drill mode.
I use this method never had a tile crack or run.
