So I either have space to do the shrugs right in front of the rack of weights, or I have to go long distance some where else because if I back up three of four feet I'll be in the way of someone doing a bench exercise.
where are you doing your other set?

I superset all the time but I never get in anyone's way. If something is occupied I have plenty of shite to do until it opens up.

Standing right in front of the row makes it harder for people to grab the weights they need. Just pick them up and back up like five plus feet. I don't think he was being an arse. Sounds like he was giving you a pro tip.

Bicep curl at a station about 20 feet from the rack of weights. The shoulder shrugs I do are with 60 lb weights so I don't want to haul them off to another corner of the gym and have to pick them up from the ground after each set.

Ok, do that. Don't block the weights rack.

So what is the alternative? Take my weights somewhere else?
Yes, that is precisely what you do.
I don’t really have too many pet peeves at the gym but people standing right in front of the dumbbell rack to do their exercises is one of the few.

The other day there was this guy doing wrist curls on the bench press bench. I politely told him to move so I could bench press. He didn’t like it but he left. I’m sure later on he realized his error and then forgot about it. The OP should do the same.

So you were looking to be validated, got torn apart instead, and now are trying to justify why you aren't going to do what you should have been doing in the first place?

You are in the wrong. Just back up and put them on the ground when you are done. Go do you next exercise and come back and do another set of shrugs. Frustrating when people stand directly in front of the dumbbell rack and do shrugs/curls. Almost as frustrating as the person who does barbell curls two feet in front of a mirror but to do so they take up the entire cable crossover machine

Ask's if he's in the wrong. Gets told he is by the majority. Argues with the majority because he cant be bothered to carry his weights away from the rack.

Alright I appreciate the responses, seems like the consensus is if the gym is crowded, then this is a bit of a selfish thing to do. The gym layout does suck for trying to do the "unselfish" thing here though.

Why not move one of the unused benches aside to make space
That's why they have wheels.
