What is this board’s opinion on Carnivore diet?

Disclaimer: I do not follow the carnivore diet.
However, a buddy of mine has been on this diet strict for 6 months and dropped 45 pounds, and is lean as all get out now. He does CF (I don’t) 4-5 times a week and claims a lot of his long time health issues and have gone away. Dude eats mainly steak, eggs, and dairy products.
Seems miserable to me, but was curious as to what the HF communities thoughts are on it.

It works and awesome. You never find the end of being bored with meat contrary to what some say, most never get bored with steak.
Basically an elimination diet and beef/meat doesn’t cause inflammation, which is the root of a ton of health problems. People generally see their cholesterol numbers improve in context.
I’ve done it strictly myself, not as strict these days. It is certainly better than snacking on SAD based foods.

To each his own. There's not really any studies to provide evidence of any benefits or negatives one way or the other. You'll certainly lose weight which will help with all sorts of other issues like inflammation.

Pretty much what junky send hulk said.
There are no real benefits except its an elimination diet which allows you to control the variables.
He losing weight cause he is in a caloric deficit. The studies show most on any type of keto diet tend to lower caloric intake over time through an unknown mechanism but believed to be due to lack of insulin spikes.
The diet can be a god send for diabetic.
Downsides are you lack a lot of micronutrients which can lead to vitamin deficiency if you don't rotate meat sources and don't take vitamins.
Not great for strength or performance specifically in weight lifting like CF. Also not good for muscle building.
In the end though, most health benefits come from being in a caloric deficit, whatever helps him do that and stay consistent than he should keep doing it. Their is nothing inherently wrong with the diet or anything magic about it, the consistency is the key.
FTR if it sounds like i am downing it, I am not. I typically use something similar. I just don't want you to think their is something magical about it.

Isn’t that basically the Atkins diet? I’m curious to see his cholesterol levels on this diet.

If you count eggs and dairy I'm probably 75% carnivore by calorie. I eat too many macadamias, pecans and other nuts, olives, avocados, berries, veggies, dark chocolate, and Kirkland bars to go full carny.
Jordan Peterson and his daughter Mikayla have a lot of info on their experience. She was debilitated before eliminating everything except beef I think.
Dr. Shawn Baker is carnivore and has a podcast w Zach Bitter. Human Performance Outliers. Decent.

I would add in some broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, spinach, etc. Not a lot of calories, gives you the vitamins you need, and will help you stay satiated. Will also help you stay regular

I'll add that there are studies associating red meat with minor increases in cancer risk, but eating veggies offsets that risk. So it's probably a good idea to toss in some veggies in some of your meals.

Why curious? There is plenty of n=1 info out there. Shawn Baker posts all his numbers and calcium score.
My lipid and inflammation profiles are ideal. HDL:Trigs ratio and NMR particle panel are superb. The old dogma about dietary cholesterol and saturated fat are unscientific. Even plain LDL numbers (as a cause--v mere correlation) of CVD is developing away from old simplistic views. And LDL is crucial for brain function and other processes.

A lot of interesting responses in this thread. Really appreciate all of them.
I tend to eat mostly meat (not always red) with a veggie and a carb. So while I don’t think I would ever go full carnivore I can see how it’s beneficial for some.

That sounds like bologna
I don’t think vegetables are necessary at all.

Completely not a fitness guy. However I can testify more to Keto than Carnivore, but it's almost the same thing. After 4 months of Keto, I find myself doing mostly carnivore. But I do eat some Kale or other veggies as long as they aren't full of carbs. My main elimination is carbs and sugar. I went from 220 to 174.
What's even more important than not being pudgy is the fact that my knees went from bothering me every time I had to climb a flight of stairs to feeling great. At 49, I feel like my legs are so happy with me being bootcamp weight. Again, I'm not much of a weight lifter kind of person. You can't go wrong between Chicken, Pork, Beef, Deer, and turkey. So many ways to grill or pan fry it. It's the diet I really craved honestly.

Started last Monday, dropped 9 pounds the first week. Obviously this won’t continue, but I feel sooo much better than my previous diet.

I’m sure it has its merits, but no vegetables at all sounds like a bad idea. Leafy greens are low in calories and provide important nutrients. You should really try to include them.

I think they have their merits. However it's just as easy to drop a scoop of whatever greens powder you have into a shake to get much more than a few servings of kale. I actually enjoy the taste of Kale though. It's a bitter acquired taste like coffee and red wine, but still something I've grown to like.
But you're right, a LOT of what we've been told over the years just hasn't aged well. Every 20 years it seems like we reverse course on what we should be doing.

Reducing carbs will help most people lose weight, however, any diet which goes to nearly 100% intake in a single food category is out of balance and will lead to insufficient intake of necessary nutrition.

I've considered trying this for a long time, but have seen alot of recommendations to include eating organs for nutrients and I don't think I can do it
