everyone knows a 1rm calculator doesn't really count...

It does when you are in your mid-40s and do not want to injure yourself, then take 3 months to heal and drop your 1RM down to 135

Higher reps throws it off, so it is probably wrong. 11@225 is too many, especially when I was on my 3 week. Next week (1) I need to hit 10 reps @ 235 for current PR. I have increments on bench going up 5lbs per cycle, but need to reset my training max after next week to bring reps down.

That’s well and all, but like what can you put on a barbell and bench press?

225 for 11 apparently.

I agree with him though. Testing maxes is for young people and competitors.

Yeah, and even though I have great form, after using a bar I hurt. I dunno if it’s age or what, but at almost 48, the bar has become my enemy.

I may try 365 in a few weeks, but I’m gonna stick with dumbbells until then.

Not a good idea...

If you are gonna try a bench max don't jump right into it after doing majority dumbells. You need to get your body used to the bar at that weight.

If you can do 315 x 10. You could do 405. 315 for 6 probably 365. 315 x 3 maybe 335ish..

This is based on my experience and not calculators.

My experience: 10lbs is around 2 reps (+/-).

315x10 would equate to 375 on the top end.

When I was really hitting bench hard, I could do 225x21 and my max was around 325-335.

Similarly, if I could do 315x1, 305 would be 2-3 reps, 295 would be 4-6 reps and 285 would be 6-8.

That’s my experience, though.

Currently, I can hit 225x10/11 and my max sits around 275-285.

I'm currently at 295lb bench, while weighing 193lbs.

ETA:

I can do 225 probably 13-15 reps. I did 10 pretty easily this week, but didn't go for more than that because we were doing 10 sets.

These numbers seem nuts.

315 max but you can do 295 for 6 reps?? no way.

225x21 and your max is only 325?? Absolutely no way.

Your calcs here are about as right as the Germans bombing Pearl Harbor.

Endurance at a particular weight doesn’t equate to top end strength for a single rep using calculators. They start shitting the bed around 10 or more and at weights over a certain poundage (varies from person to person).

I once hit 195x30 as I tried max reps at a current BW a few years ago. Around that time I was hitting 285-295 for 5-6 with a max around 325-335.

Yeah I could get 225x20 when I was around 380-405

Before contest, I did 355x5 for speed. Was going to try 405 but never got the chance.

Haven't found a 1RM in awhile but hit 185 for 1x4 and 1x3 yesterday. Gonna try for a true max at the end of the month

When I was at 225x21, my actual 1RM sat around 335.

Well it sounds like you lack top end strength then. When you plug 225x21 in a 1RM calculator it is 382.5.

Those 1RM calcs start to become highly inaccurate after 10 reps.

Yeh but you’re also ignoring the fact that anyone in the world except I reckon you who can bench 225x21 has a max MUCH higher than 325-335.

I’ve never AMRAP’d 225 but I would guess mine is around 15-17 reps. I most definitely can’t do 20 reps. And 335 is no question up for me. Max is likely ~350.

I know the calculators are really loose general guides but your numbers are way off. I’m guessing you either didn’t push yourself and don’t know what your real max was. Or your definition of a full rep when you were doing 225x21 was a very loose interpretation

Got 11@235 today, fancy math says !RM is 321.

So that is my final answer for this week.

When the calc gets to 350, I will probably try 6 plates physically and see how many reps I can get at 315.

Should have read this yesterday. Shoulder is killing me.

No more bar for me. I usually just warm up on the bar, 135x20x3 with about a minute of rest in between, but actually doing real weight always leads to right shoulder issues. Yet again, it did not disappoint.

Pre Covid was about 340 raw

Now… MAYBE 275-285 and will likely tear a pec…
