Ketogenic diet results

Was feeling really unhealthy and business travel, business meals were killing me with weight gain, and my annual physical wasn't looking good. A fellow poster, CAD703X, suggested trying the Keto plan, or similar.
So in April, I switched my diet, and started using Atkins bars. I gave up rice, potatoes, bread, chips, pasta, sauces, gravies, most fruits, cereals, fried foods, sugar, cookies and desserts.
I started eating lots of salads with fatty dressing, avocados, grilled or sauted green vegetables, cheeses, fish (especially salmon and mahi), low carb tortillas and meat. Steak, ribs, chicken, pulled pork, lamb chops, bacon, sausage, eggs and butter. I drink Irish whiskey occasionally, and even have a good beer or two once in a while. And wine. Don't skip on the wine with a nice dinner. Finally, gave been working out more and in front of the TV less.
Yes, I've lost weight. So far, almost 30 pounds. But I was worried that all that fat in my diet from the meat and butter was going to make my counts go off the charts. Wow, was I wrong.
Heart rate dropped 12 bpm.
Triglycerides fell from 167 to 79.
Total cholesterol dropped from 216 to 168.
HDL (good) cholesterol increased from 37 to 48.
LDL (bad) cholesterol decreased from 146 to 104.
VLDL cholesterol dropped from 33 to 16.
My doctor send me an email this morning (yes, on a Sunday morning) congratulating me on the excellent turnaround and said to stop taking my cholesterol medication and come back in three months to see if the diet is still working. He said I was the first patient he's had that turned around the numbers so quickly on what he thought would have been an unhealthy plan choice.
I'm now a big believer in this diet! I feel better, I can exercise more, my joints don't ache and I just feel better. The wife said I've also stopped snoring at night, too. Bonus!
Thanks CAD!

What was your starting weight?

Cheap carbs are the real enemy not healthy fats. Some people can do without as much carbs but some do need moderate amounts of complex carbs. There is no size fits all. Congrats on your results.

Congrats on the improvements. Ive had similar anecdotal results, though no testing to verify levels. My changes were in a search for peak performance, in both workouts and day to day. workout improvements have been great, resting energy has leveled off. Cravings have dissipated, just made it through labor day weekend with zero sweets consumed, which is a first.
I still search for improvements in work hour performance. Its very difficult to focus at times, especially on weekends when my employees are not with me in my office.
Don't want to hijack, congrats again

quote:true. Sugar is the real enemy along with carbs. I’m not going full on Keto my diet is probably closer to paleo. I lost about 10 lbs from a pretty low starting weight and have kept it off. I was curious how my cholesterol and other numbers would look at my annual checkup with eating all of this extra fat. Best numbers I’ve posted in 4 years.

Congrats Bubba!
Likewise, whenever I get a bit heavy, I start feeling like crap.
I've learned to eat modestly and keep my weight in check. Treat it as a game, punish myself if I don't attain certain weight and exercise goals.
Of course I fail or eat like a Himalayan Snow Dog occasionally but you just put it behind you and move on.

quote:Amazing that we were all told to use a low-fat diet for years and years and turns out to be the other way if you moderate the carbs and sugars. I haven't eaten any processed foods since mid-April.

One of the best post-workout recovery drinks is chocolate milk. Sugar and protein. People demonize things they know nothing about. My pre-workout drink is a little coffee with honey. Once again, simple carbs that the body can convert into energy quickly and feed protein into the muscles to aid recovery.

shite works for sure. Since April, I'm down from 207 to about 170 due to Keto.

How much exercise are you doing? I lost 32 lbs (224 to 192) doing a version of keto last year but was still skinny fat.
I put a bunch back on and have started back up. Down 218 to 208 in a few weeks. May really need to hit the gym.

Can you eat regular pasta on this diet? I couldn't go without pasta at least once a week

Wife and I just started something similar. I'm trying to get off blood pressure medication. I've lost 15 lbs as a bonus
