ive got a laser, however i dont like that ill have to move it to see around walls, into bathrooms, etc. i like that the water pipe can go anywhere and take a measurement.

am i off base here?

thanks, please expand. some places have settled perhaps 2". i assume you mean dont try to get all 2" back in one spot at one lift, but plan to move everything up together as much as possible. this would mean lots of shifting jacks around, or rounding up lots of jacks, but i see how that is a wiser and safer method

pleas expand however if youre willing, thank you

leveling a pier and beam house

its a small 900 sf farm house. i intend to use the clear pipe w/ water method to determine lift heights necessary throughout. then get under the house with hydraulic jacks and lift the beams and use stacked asphalt roofing shingles b/n concrete piers and beams to maintain the new height

any advice is welcomed. thanks

i did think of this but don't see much of a market for this in south central LA. any thoughts on where /how to advertise? I've just subscribed to the LDAF Market Bulletin and will look in there (haven't received my first issue yet since resubscribing)

ive lived it. my dads favorite april fools prank was running into our bedrooms at 3 am yelling the cows are out, the cows are out! wed all get up and half asleep trip over everything and each other dragging clothes on getting outside. about the time we were loading in the truck with flashlights hed drop the APRIL FOOLS! it worked everytime and im sure you know why - because the cows got out a lot

like the previous poster said - take the good with the bad, and ill take it

i appreciate the feedback. will be contacting farm bureau for the insurance discussion

thanks. ill check on stocker sales. side note/question about stockers - ive read about stocker cattle but does not seem to be an active market in SLA. i assume its due to distance from the midwest feedlots but not certain. have you any success grazing stockers?

sheep is on the wishlist but not a top priority. ive read that sheep and cattle are good in rotation as their parasites are different, and rotating them helps combat parasites. again, all academic knowledge at this point i dont personally know anyone rotating them in my climatic area

i have a head catch and squeeze chute, with some push pens. ive read about a bud box however and hope to eventually install one

great info thanks for the reply

start in cattle

Posted by aldawg2323 on 12/1/25 at 6:47 am
ive purchased 48 acres of old unimproved hay patch in southwest LA and are building fence and setting water points for livestock. i hope to have a rotational grazing operation with multiple protein enterprises (cattle, chickens, sheep) i understand this is the greatest time ever to have live animals to sell, and therefore a bid time to try to get in. Id appreciate any opinions on how to get started. below are some options based on conversations with other cattleman, media, online research, etc

1 buy a local herd. big upfront $, but you get animals that you know are adapted to your environment

2 lease the pasture. i dont think there is a great market for this but ive not aggresively researched the market

3 custom graze. depending on demand available, seems a good way to get some income with little upfront $ other than what ive already spent on fence and water. one idea ive heard for payment is to keep a percentage of the calf crop which i like the sound of

4 buy commercial cattle from the sale barn. caveat emptor

any others? thanks

re: Lower back pain - what to do next

Posted by aldawg2323 on 10/13/25 at 12:48 pm to
it sounds like squats are in your routine, and that and deadlifts are what i attribute to my back strength improving

Ben Patrick has some side bend movements using dbs and a roman chair, perhaps try those

ive developed an informal morning practice of alternating b/n simply sitting on the floor and a deep squat for long periods, perhaps 45 minutes alternating back and forth while drinking coffee, reading, etc. I attribute much of my back health to this practice

ive not had to use it but have shared this soft tissue rehab protocol with others LINK

good luck
