I nearly did a mile on treadmill today

I don't usually do treadmill, been getting more brave lately. So, i warmed up .15 distance today at brisk walk, then rate at a good rate all way up till 1.06 or so, then walked it down for a bit.
In any case, for someone just using this as an additional means to stay fit, should i focus more on distance or more on getting in a fast mile...?

on a treadmill? do incline repeats
full incline
walk for .1, then sprint for .1, then walk, then sprint and so forth

You're recommending running on full incline?

Only Ivan Drago can do that.

It's a pain in the arse to continuously change speed on the treadmill I use.

I got crucified on the OT Board a while back for posting this, but I read an article in Men's Health that said running on treadmill without changing the incline can make you look like you have a pot belly. They recomended to warm up on 4-4.5 mph for 5 to 10 mins, then, adjust the incline and increase speed by .2 mph every 2 mins. You want to be at 10% incline and 6 mph for the 28th to 30th minute.
First time I did that, I had trouble walking for 3 days.
Running on flat treadmill I'm assuming only works the lower abs and doesn't make them cut, thus looking like a pot belly.

Here's a tip I do when I run incline sprints. I typically jump one foot to each side of the rolling part of the treadmill to change speeds. It makes it much easier to do it and plus you can catch your breath a little as it slows down to walking pace.

Same here. The ones at my gym have quick set buttons for 2, 4, or 6 MPH. Makes it convenient to go from 7.5-8 back to 4, but I still have to increase it by 1/10 increments back to 7.5. And it is slow to get back up there.

Try to do intervals as much as you can.
FYI you need to always do a 1.0 incline to mimic the road

To the OP, true story- use to run 8+ miles per day, around 60-70 a week and finally met with a good trainer who put together a program for me.
Now I run 3x a week and none are more than 40 minutes. I actually got leaner when I switched to this.
FYI I'm lifting the same as I did before, just the cardio is what changed.

Supposedly long distance running decreases your testosterone levels.
A study by the University of Melbourne in Australia, published in the September 1996 issue of the “British Journal of Sports Medicine,” found that running at short durations of less than two hours increased testosterone levels. After two hours, circulation of testosterone was suppressed. A 2000 study by the University of British Columbia, published in the August 2000 issue of the “British Journal of Sports Medicine,” supports these findings, noting a decrease when mileage exceeds 40 miles a week.

Only if you maintain a death grip on the top of the machine.
