Not sure if this is the right board. Was gonna go OT but didn’t want to post pics of my wife.

Anyone successfully battled a mind that always is going? My mind races from the time I wake up until I’m fully asleep in the evening and it’s exhausting. I cannot ever sit back and just relax, it feels like. I can’t watch movies, can’t read books, can’t sit and watch TV without having multiple things going on and having to go to dinner with my wife or friends is torture. I always feel like I need to have something else going on or I get very fidgety. Over the past few months I have noticed that I have some good highs but the lows are getting worse, it seems like. A lot of it is due to my mind racing and going places that I can get out of.

Not sure what to do/try but I do know that it’s affecting my relationships with my wife, daughter and friends.

Tried. Can’t stop my mind long enough to actually enjoy it.

Keep doing it. You have to learn how to meditate correctly. Do guided.

If you can't focus on guided meditation try a simple breathing one first. I think the Calm app has it. Set it to however many breaths per minute is comfortable for you and just breathe as it instructs you.

Seeing someone professionally to talk through this would be a great step for you. Research psychologists in your area, and you may even have available options covered through insurance. It sounds like you’re dealing with anxiety and depression.

Have some whiskey and a cigar with a friend or solo. Works wonders.

Like the above mentioned said, it takes practice. You normally have like 8 things going on in your mind at once and you’re only aware of 2-3 of them bc that’s all you can focus on. When you start meditating and all of a sudden you become aware of 6 things swimming around in there at once it freaks you out, but continuing to breath through it helps you clear eventually. Just breath positive energy in and all the negative shite out.
I’ve got to where I’m pretty good at it and sometimes in a 20 minute meditation I may only have 5 minutes of serenity, but that means I had 15 minutes of clearing work that needed to be done.

It’s an exercise. It’s not supposed to be enjoyable until it’s over. When your in the middle of it it sometimes feels like torture but it’s training your mind to focus on what you want it to.

Meditate or run. I've found I can totally clock out when running. Just strap in the headphones and go. Best part of my day.

Sounds like anxiety, tbh. Meditation may help if you get the hang of it, but you may get faster/better results by seeing a professional.

I’ve been a smoker since college (20+ years). Have had to put it down because 5% of the time it causes me extreme anxiety. 90% of the time it causes anxiety and 5% I’m good! I’ve also been taking some gummies to help me fall asleep which are hit/miss.

I guess I’ve never tried to label it but the more I read, the more I think labeling will help with the recovery.

I have reached out to a professional to start the process. It has been very hard to take that first step but I cannot continue to have the train going on the track it is.

Funny story about a “run”. A few weeks ago I had a DAY so I went out for a walk, I don’t run. Y neighborhood has a great loop which is 2.25 miles long. I went around once and came home, my wife and kid weren’t home yet so I went around again. About 1/2 way through I realized I made a mistake!! I finished and for a few days afterwards, my arse killed me. I will say that during and after the walk, I did feel better. I still could not turn off my brain and enjoy the serenity/music.

I found riding a bike in a pleasant setting works in a similar fashion to running. Just another option.

Exercise in general is a good idea too.

Well done, every decision you make related to therapy should get easier now that you’ve gotten over the first hurdle. Remember to be patient. Like meditation, therapy is a process, not a quick fix. You may even go through multiple therapists to find one you click with or feel more comfortable opening up to.

Also FYI I dealt with this a few years back and went to a psychologist and ultimately a psychiatrist. I take an anti depressant daily now, even though most ppl who know me have no idea. All that to say, it’s probably a lot more common than you realize and there’s nothing wrong with admitting that you need some help. You’ll be happy you did when you find something that works for you.
