Had a pretty bad wipeout today at Steamboat. A couple of moguls snuck up on me on a groomed blue and I lost control with my knee buckling under me. Hurts like hell to carve on the slopes or when putting weight on it while walking up the stairs, but I can walk and pivot fine.

My uncle and my friend who are both doctors both think it sounds like a meniscus tear. Any of the fine medical professionals on the OT care to give me any advice? Should I ice down and if it feels better tomorrow resume skiing on greens only?

I have. Had a scope to repair by trimming part of it off. I was 19 and recovery was about 3-4 weeks.

Had an MRI over a year ago and it was a tear. I have had three people I know gone in to repair it and wound up more fricked up than they started. I haven't felt pain in about 8 months.

I have a torn meniscus. My orthopedic surgeon has treated it by way of injection of a gel. Very painful shot, but the gel does give substantial relief for a few months.

Yep. In each knee. Had them both cleaned out in 2014 as I couldn't stand it anymore. One had been torn since about 1985 and the other 2013 and I couldn't run or sleep without being in pain of some sort. AND it was worse at night.

And the buckling sounds like it could be ACL as well. Husband tore his ACL and MCL skiing December 2019 .. surgery in January 2020 and he's still not quite 100%.

Not sure I'd ski on it ... good luck.

Mine was MCL and meniscus and my knee still wobbles 15 years later, never had surgery but it doesn’t hurt anymore. These were very small damages

Why not go get it checked out by a walk-in clinic or orthopedic specialist in Steamboat ? You could do lots more damage and seriously jack up your ACL, PCL, MCL if there's ligament damage. The normal rule of thumb for lower extremity injuries is RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation). NSAIDs (non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs) are usually pre-scribed to relieve swelling.

Trust me, you're fricked. Tore mine with some cartilage a few years back. 3 surgeries later and I'm still unable to run. You'll be able to shred but it's entirely dependent on your pain threshold.

Had a "bucket handle" meniscus tear along with a torn ACL a few years ago. Recovery sucked, it was 7 weeks until I could put weight on the meniscus and it was my right leg so no driving.

Good news is that after 4 months or so I was moving around pretty well and made a complete recovery in the end.

I tore mine over 20 years ago. Sounded like a twig broke. Had mri showed torn meniscus. Had surgery a few months later and they found torn acl. They did not repair then obviously because it was a different surgery. I have never had the acl repaired and for most part it is good. I just avoid must twisting and planting. I can feel it ‘give’ every now and then. Lately my knee is hurting mainly in front so about to get it checked again

Yeah, its a sharp pain when. you walk. I would get a cortisone shot in the mean time

After you get surgery, you'll be good in 3-4 weeks

The sooner you get the surgery the better

5 knee operations and a staphylococcus infection has left me with no soft tissue in my right knee. Choose your Orthopedist and hospital wisely.

If it is torn, all you can do is more damage that leads to a longer rehab or maybe surgery. Your call, but think I would call it a day.
