Been playing for about a year now, have only had a 54 degree wedge. Have used it for out of the sand, around the green, and about 90 yards and in.

Looking at getting a set of wedges and not sure about going to 52,56,60 vs sticking with the 54 and getting a 58.

Any advice?

I have a 56* mid bounce and 60* low bounce. My gap wedge is 50*.

What's your handicap? I think a PW, SW, and LW is more than sufficient for most golfers.

My wedges go 46, 50, 54 & 58. I barely use the 58 and would be just fine taking it out of the bag.

For me personally, I would hate to have that big of a gap between my PW and my next wedge. My current setup goes 46, 51, 56, 61 and I use all of them with regularity.

58 sounds good, but you likely need a 48 or a 50 as well.

Many set wedges have drifted down to 43 or 44.

Cobra set wedge recently was 41.5.

Find a way to check your lofts.

I would second this. I added a 60 and would be fine removing it. I’ve practiced multiple shots with my Gap and 54 degree and just become extremely comfortable with those. Am I able to hit every shot with those lofts? No… but I realized I save a lot more strokes being ultra comfortable with those clubs. The 60 just has too many variables that can cost me shots

Go to a simulator or a demo day with a trackman outside. This question is impossible to answer without knowing the distances on your PW, but you are just trying to bridge the gap between your wedges.

3 vs. 2 wedges just comes down to where you feel more comfortable working with larger gaps in yardage, either your short game or your woods.

My PW is 45° so I went 50,55(54 bent weaker) and 60..

But, of you're comfortable with hit the 54 on a lot of shots I would just add a 58 or 60 to the bag and see if that works out.. as opposed to buying 3 wedges.

I have the same wedges. However I use the 58 a lot and the 50 very little (only for a specific yardage. Low bounce on the 58 for around the greens, tight lies etc

Most people do not need a lob wedge imo .

I took mine out for a driving iron years ago, a 56 degree gets the ball high enough if you know how to hit a high shot.

I have 5 “wedges” now:

44° “PW”
48°
52°
56°
60°

I use the last 3 around the green depending on the shot required and lie/turf conditions. I highly suggest having one wedge with higher bounce and one with lower bounce to use from different sand and turf conditions. A low bounce lob wedge does you no good in fluffy sand. But a high bounce sand wedge is useless in wet compacted bunkers. Wedge bounce and grinds are more important than what loft you use, IMO.

How many clubs do you keep in your bag

I use a 48PW, 52, 56, and 60 but I keep the standard max of 14 clubs. No way would I sacrifice my 3 hybrid for a 44, which is only 2-3 off from a standard 9 iron.

He's only been playing a year, he doesn't need to base his wedges on the correct bounce for multiple types of sand. He uses a 54, he needs to stick with that since that's what he's used to and add a 58.

14. That's why I have quotes around "PW". It's basically a 9 iron.

When he wonders why he keeps skulling his pitches off firm turf, I'll direct him to your post.
