The official SMS first annual bourbon bracket has concluded. I will be providing the results over the next few days/week.

Let me remind everyone of the rules:
Each selection had to be bourbon <$100 aftermarket
Each selection was given a number ahead of the bracket. All I was given by Mrs. SMS was the 2 numbers that were competing. I didn't receive the names until the end.
Games were played head-to-head with the scoring below.

Taste: The intensity of the taste. 40 pts possible
Finish: The quality of the finish. 30 pts possible
Complexity: How complex was the flavor: 20 pts possible
Nose: Different aromas. 10 pts possible.

The East Bracket:

Old Bardstown - 63
WLW 12 - 76

Spring Mill - 53
Breckenridge - 66

Medley Brothers - 56
Henry Duyours - 72 (This was surprising)

Cyprus Noble - 81 (I think I might have been a little drunk for this "game" )
Rough Rider - 62

McKenna - 53
Russels Reserve Single Barrel - 56

Trader Joes - 62 (SMS Value Pick)
Colorado Gold - 66

1792 Small Batch - 67
Russells Reserve 10 - 40

Rock Hill Farms - 59 (This was a surprise)
Blantons - 70

So, I took the advice of the board and got some Eagle Rare the other week. I liked it, but since Im new to whiskey I found another bottle to try.

This stuff any good? Wasnt very expensive, but the place I was at didnt have the best selection. Ill go somewhere else next time.

For anyone going to the Bourbon Society tasting at Olive or Twist on Thursday, don't be late. I am throwing in a bottle that will be poured with the flight, first come first serve till it is gone.

Do you to have to be a member of the society to go, or is it an open tasting?

There is a $100 fee payable to SMS.

No.. The event is open to anyone. The $100 fee to SMS is optional.

There is a new memeber initiation once a year where you have to drink and entire bottle of LA1 and be able to pick out the pappy from the benchmark in blind tasting.

No there is no, memebership, just an informal group that BSofBR put together. A couple of bars that know good bourbon in Baton Rouge have tastings for us from time to time. They put together a flight, normally of hard to find stuff at a really nice price and we drink and BS.

No fees or anything like that. You just pay for your drinks. The old rip will be part of the flight, but it was free so you won't be paying for that pour.

We will announce later tonight or maybe just have it be a surprise on the rest of the flight, not sure yet. And we will have a giveaway tomorrow too, expect delicious bourbon.

Shhh, don't speak of the initiations! We can neither confirm nor deny that to be in the group you have to take a shot of LA1.

is that LA1 bad because it's so young or is it just bad distillate?
