What restaurants did you start going back to after writing them off?

I went to Mestizo in BR a few times around 2010ish, thought it was okay and haven't been back until last year after vendor brought some of their food to work. I've been back a few times and think their food is great now.

It’s always been great. Jim Urdiales knows how to cook some wonderful food and the atmosphere is top notch.

I use to go to Jim’s place back when it was on Sherwood Forest Blvd. It was very good back then also.

Funny enough, same exact thing for me and Mestizo. I think I just chose poorly and it was before the remodel back when I had first gone. Now I love it.
J Alexander's and Mansur's are two restaurants we certainly never "wrote off", but neither were in the rotation or even our radar much. Now we visit both at least monthly, if not 2-3x a month. I love a restaurant that has something for everyone no matter what you're into, and both fit that bill. Plus, both run lots of daily specials if you want something different.

This is one of those places that's consistently packed, but I never hear anyone talk about it. Definitely goes under the radar for the "foodie" groups, but I can't say I've ever had anything even remotely bad there. On the top of our list, too.
And Mansur's, to me, is in the IYKYK group. I've been eating there my entire life, even back to the old location lol. Always a winner, but also another one that doesn't seem to be one of the cool kids. I don't care, I want consistently good food/service and a cloth napkin.

J Alexander's was one of my favorite places when I lived in BR.

I haven't been to J Alexander's in a while, and I appreciate the reminder to go back. Their tuna and salmon are always fresh, well seasoned and perfectly cooked.

Chili's has allegedly risen from the ashes to become once of the best fast casual restaurants in the country.
Haven't been in years, but that's the word on the street.

J Alexander's is the best restaurant in BR that nobody knows it exist.

quote:I can provide one data point in support of this. Loved Chilis when I was younger, in college a long time ago, it was solid burger, nachos, etc. Ordered some in 2020 during the pandemic and it was absolute dogshit, some of the worst food I have ever had, threw most of it away. About six months ago my teenaged daughter asked me to take her to lunch to the same Chilis (she and her friends eat there all the time). I was skeptical, but ordered an Old Timer and it was, well, like old times, just a great burger and a solid all around experience. Been back a half dozen times since and consistently good.

Had a couple of not so good meals at Chow Yum Fat when they opened up under the overpass
Tried it again about a year ago and it’s one of my favorites in town now
Also honorable mention to Walk Ons for getting written off, enjoyed again, and now written off again

Same experience with Chilis. I had sworn off them years ago, but I tried one recently and both the food and service were pretty good.

GW Fins
We got off to a bad start, but now it's one of my regular stops.

Went to one in San Antonio in May and it was absolute dogshit.

Been several times and always really enjoyed it especially the ribeye for the table and whole fish. Went about a year or two ago and the service was so horrible we haven't been back. I get the casual environment with upscale food and prices but damn it was terrible.
ETA: my post is obviously the opposite of the thread's intent; I just needed to share

I will go back to Walk Ons.
Shamefully I will forget how underwhelming it is in 7 months and go back. Repeat.

I like J Alexanders fine, I've just always been caught off guard by how Tennessee people are obsessed with it. It's like Dunkin in New England.
And it always struck me as a direct imitation of Houston's (a commonly shared sentiment I think).
