What great Louisiana foods and food products should I stock up on before moving? What’s best shop for online ordering?
I’ll be in Louisville. 10 1/2 hours away so I want to make sure I take some goods with me and be able to order online. Thanks!

Andouille sausage. It’s very hard to find quality andouille outside a few states like Louisiana.

As someone who lives 10 hours away, these are the items I like to take back with me:

Andouille sausage - agree with AbitaFan08, the quality is just not the same

Boudin - usually get a variety of the items I prefer

Stuffed Chickens

In Laws usually bring up smoked sausage from Lake Charles and Billy's boudin when they drive up. Also like to make sure we have Steen's cane syrup and Cousin's creole tomato dressing.

Stuff you can't find where you're moving or will cost an arm and a leg to buy in your new location.

Friend of mine came down from Indiana in Feb. of 06 to get work as a carpenter after Katrina and stayed at my house until August of 06. He went home a couple times between those dates and made sure to take back Boudin, Andouille, alligator tail meat and lots of fresh shrimp that he bagged and put in his freezer. He even had his wife buy a new freezer to store all the stuff in that he was taking back.

He got the shrimp here for around $2 a lb. and the same shrimp in Bloomington would have cost him in the area of $10 a lb. at the time.

jarred roux
good andouille
good boudin
good smoked sausage

if you're one that uses convenience mixes like jambalaya, etouffee, beignet mix, king cake mix etc, be sure to stock up.

I'd also bring a bag or 2 of Mardi Gras beads.

Cousin's creole tomato dressing.
Actual recipe is in the F&D board recipe collection.

Cousin's Creole Tomato Salad Dressing

"Several people mentioned that they like Cousin's Creole Tomato Salad Dressing. Here is my copycat recipe you can try. The original product only had these 4 ingredients, but now the formula has been changed to prolong shelf life (according to a friend that knows the maker). The garlic, being raw, gives the dressing a nice "bite".

This is the original recipe.

4 cups mayonnaise
3/4 cup chopped tomato
1/2 cup peeled garlic cloves
1 Tbs black pepper

Put all ingredients in a food processor and process until smooth.

Some Louisiana-adjacent products that you can’t necessarily make yourself:
-Blue Runner beans
-Jack Millers
-Blue Plate Mayo
-Regional alcohols
-Grits (can be difficult to find)
-Community Coffee (I order on Amazon)
-Magnalite pots

Also, boudin freezes well enough.

I just moved to Nashville about 6 months ago and went through this. Sausage is the biggest thing. What they have here is garbage. Everything mentioned so far is spot on. I am partial to Luzianne ice tea. I brought this with me along with Supreme rice

I’d be sure to buy a lifetime Louisiana hunting and fishing license before moving. Not food but could be food related.
