UPDATED: Landlord Refused to Renew Lease

Per the 40 Arpent Brewing Company Facebook account.

It is with a heavy heart that I regretfully inform you that as of 4pm this evening 40 Arpent Brewing Company will close its doors and no longer produce some of the best Louisiana Beer made. We would like to thank our Friends, Families, and Fans, especially the "Fans" for your support over the years.

They seem a little salty.

Even though I don't think they produced some of the best Louisiana Beer made, I don't want to see any local guys go under. A bummer for the craft beer scene overall.

Just saw this. Was there over the weekend and had no idea. I think they strugged to get product on shelves, and their location was a blessing and a curse. Awesome to be on the levee, but hard to get to and out of the way.

No secret craft beer financials are tough right now, and a ton of new competition.

The bombers didn't do them any favors but I enjoyed their beers the times I had them.

They never produced anything that stood out to me.

It sucks though. It's getting tougher and tougher for craft breweries. There is just so much competition around.

Wonder if we are in the middle of a craft beer bubble?

I think we are already way past that.

How many of the breweries that distribute actually have consistent sales? I can't imagine that many of them are doing that well on the shelves outside of Parish, Gnarley Barley, Great Raft and a few others that depend on a flagship beer or two.

I would guess that most of them do, or they would be going out of business just like 40 Arpent.

I was wondering the same thing. Wayward Owl is relatively new and I haven't ordered a single one of their beers twice. Same with Second Line....also 40 Arpent.

There's now an article on NOLA.com here LINK

"According to Michael Naquin, founder of 40 Arpent, his landlord, who also own a large stake in the brewery, refused to renew the brewery's lease. Naquin said he did not have the money to re-launch the brewery elsewhere."

If the landlord is also an investor and he refused on the lease then the financials must have been pretty bad. Presumably, Naquin asked for a price reduction or a price freeze given the sales and the landlord said no. If that's untrue and business was going well then he'd have found some person or bank to finance a move.

In a poor location you have to produce beer better than anyone else and that failed. And yeah, he sounds salty.

I started a thread about this issue a few weeks back... LINK

To add to your list of ones we have to assume are doing well is Nola Brewery and of course Abita.

It just seems like it has to be tough for these places that aren't making good beer and aren't driving crowds to come on-site.

Second Line is another one that I would be worried about.

To lessen any confusion, my name is Parrish with two R's like the artist Maxfield Parrish, not one R like the brewery or municipality.

No just too much good craft beer out there now to buy the stuff that isn't good.
