I’ve never liked sweet tea and always find it to be so sweet I usually need water after to get the sugar taste out of my mouth. It also annoys the hell out of me how the default tea option is “sweet.”

Grew up in Metairie and Lafayette. Always drank tea unsweetened. Moved to Charlotte when I was 17 and tried sweet tea for the first time...it was nasty. Though over the years, I've gotten to where I can drink it either way.

Alton Brown, in "Feasting on Asphalt", came to New Orleans and since New Orleans is in the South, hew assumed the tea would be sweet. It was not.
I don't know if it's a NOLA thing or not, but I'm from NOLA, and I drink it unsweetened. I view it as an advantage because you really get to taste the different variations off teas.

I think all over south Louisiana you can choose between sweetened or unsweetened tea. Another way that we’re a unique part of the south. Visitors from all over are usually pleasantly surprised, unless they’re from a sweet tea state.

Unsweetened tea has no taste? Sweet is a no brainer you live in the south. It’s custom.

Unsweet is my favorite drink in the world, sweet tea is probably my least favorite. It is terrible. Probably influenced by my first job at McDonald's when I turned 16 and had to brew some of their sweet tea. I think they changed it since then, literally would dump a 7 lb bag of sugar into the sweet tea container and mix for 5 minutes. I think a regular drink had 80 grams of sugar.

Most restaurant tea is obnoxiously sweet so half sweet half unsweet for me.
If there is lemonade available 1/3 lemonade, 1/3 sweet, 1/3 unsweet.

Cut out soft drinks, and added sugars a while back. Everything is too sweet now.

Yep. I think it was Canes sweet tea that did it for me. Way too much sugar for one drink.

sweetened tea (with sugar) = candy bar in a glass. Road to diabetes, just like any regular consumption of added sugars. But I do partake a glass now and then, but usually stay with unsweetened and add couple packets of Splenda. I also like to keep a bottle or two at home of Lipton Citrus Diet.
