Sauerkraut and hot dogs over rice...

Was this a thing in anyone else's family? The old timers in my family that grew up during the great depression made it weekly when I was growing up. I still make it and was thinking of how cheap it is to make, yet tastes better and fills the stomach more than 90% of anything else I can think of.

I've never heard of this until this thread and while I'm happy you have fond memories of this, I wish I hadn't heard of it.

Well, instead of saurkraut over a hotdog on a bun, it's hotdog slices smothered in sauerkraut and put over rice. Actually not much difference other than rice vs bread.

I grew up poor and ate a lot of fried eggs over rice, or grits, for dinner.
This actually doesn't sound so bad if that's all there is.
Bonus points if it's homemade sauerkraut.

Had it alot growing up but not over rice.
My mom was a potato person so we had a side of fried potatoes browned in lard. Most likely green beans with it as well.

Sauerkraut and mashed potatoes were very common at my MiL's house. I thought it suspect at first, but it works. She just cut up some hotdogs to put in it, but the kraut and taters were the main thing.
Never thought about putting it on rice.

We ate sauerkraut and weenies by themselves and not over rice. Even as an adult, I still make it every so often.

I had an uncle who loved sauerkraut and wieners, sans buns. He’d make a huge pot of it in a Dutch oven with a package of Oscar Meyer classics.
Rice and sauerkraut is wrong on several levels though.

Smothered cabbage with tasso or sausage on top of rice is satisfying. I will have to try the sauerkraut and hotdogs over rice and report back.

Over rice?
That's a new one to me. I have had sauerkraut many other ways and helped make it before in clay crock that was 100+ years old. But never heard it mentioned in the same sentence as rice.

I mean I'd eat it but upgrading to sausage seems so easy and not that cost prohibitive.

I've made a dish where I layered cabbage, sauerkraut, apple slices, and sausage and/or pork chops in a crockpot. I don't know if it has a name, but it tastes pretty good.

When I was a kid we ate scrambled eggs with leftover rice and cut up hotdogs for dinner pretty routinely, I still make it from time to time.

My mom made sauerkraut with ribs or hot dogs; the hot dogs turned the water pink. This was in the early 70’s. We weren’t “poor” in the sense that we went without anything, but she was pretty frugal. When she made it, I ate cereal.
