Guess that's why I prefer to buy my own prime steaks and grill at home. I can cook all the sides you can get at Ruth's Chris and a nice bottle of wine to go with it for a lot less than sitting down and having it brought out to me.

Yea I can cook shittier versions of food at my house also.

Yay

I mean, I get it if you’re someone who likes steak often. But Ruth’s just has really solid food in a celebratory atmosphere, and OP is surprising his wife for her first visit on their anniversary. Maybe OP doesn’t have the skill, or even the interest/desire, to make his own steak at home for a special occasion.

I think it sounds fun and TBH I’m jealous.

Then come to my house and learn how to cook if you cook so bad.

I'm not saying I've not enjoyed the times I've gone to Ruth's Chris over the years. But as I've gotten older and now living on retirement income and fixed pension, it is an extravagance I don't take but once in a blue moon.

I can get prime steaks, but I know theirs are also dry aged for another level of flavor I don't get at home.

Just for the record, I can throw down a mean steak at home. I'm 42, not 19, and this will be our 17th anniversary. I haven't eaten at Ruth's before because we don't usually spend a week's worth of groceries for a meal I can cook at home, which is why she'll be so surprised and why I asked what was good there, so I don't waste my money. Hell, it might be 5 years before I go back. Lol

Thinking back, the most I ever spent on a steak was a couple of years ago at ruffinos on one of their steaks they aged in that salt room they had. That was a pretty good steak. Probably the most overrated I've had was at Doe's. I didn't care for the half cow that showed up on the table. The thing was mostly fat and just ridiculous to try to eat.

It is a very nice treat and I'm absolutely sure you and your wife will enjoy the meal, and the experience. I'm not opposed to eating out at a nice restaurant every now and then, and at 66 and having been cooking since my early teens, I'm very adept in the kitchen too.

But that is a special treat and one I'm sure you two will remember for a long time.

Oh, and Happy Anniversary to you and yours.

I think you'll enjoy the entire evening. I love going to Ruth's Chris. I don't order steak out very often, but I will there. Plus, you don't have to do the cooking or clean up!

I can cook and I cook quite often, but I also like to dine out. I can cook a good steak, but I cannot cook one that tastes like they do at Ruth's Chris. They have special ovens, for one thing.

Go and enjoy! You've gotten great recs. Happy anniversary!

I like to split:

porterhouse for two
side of béarnaise
au gratin potatoes
salad of your choice

with generous tip, bill will be less than $100

It's nice to get pampered once in a while. Ruth's is a good place to get taken care of. It's very good, and consistent.

When discussing steakhouses, there’s always that one a-hole that has to let everyone know he can make better steaks at home.

It’s been like this since the beginning of time.

The wife and I always get the sweet potato casserole with the filet and a glass of red wine. Skip the salad and order the large filet. If they have the chocolate sin cake on the menu, I highly recommend it. Also goes great with red wine.

Happy anniversary.

For a while I was eating nothing but ribeyes at home, then a year or so ago I switched to strips. I’ve had both at Ruth’s but went back to a filet the past couple trips. All of their steaks are good, but for me the difference between a Ruth’s filet and a filet I can cook at home is just light years ahead of the difference between a Ruth’s ribeye or strip and the same steak cooked at home. Ruth’s filet is just on another level for me.

The sides are big enough to share, but still get a couple and bring home the leftovers. The sides are that good.

Yeah, I know it's now the norm for drinks at nice restaurants and tourist traps to be in the $10 and up range. Guess that's why I prefer to buy my own prime steaks and grill at home. Must we really always have one of these comments in a restaurant thread?

I'll echo all of the above and add that the Chopped Salad is excellent.

My favorite! I have to get it every time I go.

ETA: Unless it's changed from the last time I went, their steaks are not all dry aged as some poster said earlier. If they have a dry aged option though, go that route.

Love their ribeye.

Can't go wrong with any of the sides.

Only go about once or twice a year but I've never had a bad meal.

Not in the same way that Ruth's does.
