Starting with Ketchup on an all beef dog. My younger kids give me a little grief on this, but im starting them early on that pallet cleanse. That damn sugar tomato sauce drowns out so many other good flavors you could have. I barely have room for everything I want, an ideal dog for me is sauerkraut, dill relish, onion, tomato (which usually has to stay off for rooms sake) chili, cheese, and most importantly, heavy on the yellow mustard.

On a regular dog, that turns into a mess. Usually when im stuck with a regular sized bun, I've gotta stick with mustard, sauerkraut, relish, chili/cheese in that order of priority. That said, I hate to see food content creators, street vendors for example, make a delicious dog just to see that damn Ketchup come out and destroy the taste and integrity of the dog. It clashes with every other ingredient and it's like watching activists splash red paint on famous art. Obviously I'm joking but it really does suck to see a good dog drowned in sugar sauce.

As for pickles, It's not as upsetting to see a good burger ruined by them but all I can taste is that damn pickle. Even the juice is powerful enough to clash with the rest. I use plenty of relish when I make my sauce though. Ketchup (yup), mustard, mayo, worcestershire, relish, melindas ghost pepper creamy wing sauce (GOAT hot sauce), and seasonings with sautéed mushrooms and onion makes a burger better than I can get almost anywhere else. Fresh lettuce and tomato is dependant on my mood, but never the damn pickles. Crinkle cut or regular, they just throw the entire burger off.

Just wondering what the concensus is on these two, I know it's snobby to treat them like blasphemy, so does anyone else put their foot down on this?

All the other stuff you mentioned overpowers the flavor as much as ketchup and pickles.

For me it’s mustard and relish on a dog only but I’m flexible on a burger depending on the day.

You use all of that, but you're talking about pickles overpowering the burger?

I love raw onions and pickles on mine with more mustard than mayo. Raw onions and pickles together taste great to me. I like to have them with my fried catfish as well. A bite of fish with bites of onion and pickle at the same time is delicious.

That's a good point. I suppose my problem is the pairing. I can forgive a kid for a mustard and Ketchup dog (I'd still go only mustard if those two are the only choices) but slapping Ketchup together with any of the aforementioned is just awful.

Never on a dog but I might dip a burger in ketchup particularly a smash burger but never apply it directly to whole patty.

I personally can't see ketchup being more of an overpowerer than sour kraut, mustard, chili etc.

I will eat my food how I want. Is someone forcing you to eat it their way? If not, then why worry?

Not sure it is the Ketchup that is the problem, maybe it is you. I've rarely seen tomato on a hot dog. I like either relish or sauerkraut, but not both, and some sort of sauce. Chili dogs should be separate, maybe top with finely diced onions, but in addition to kraut and relish? Way too much on the toppings to be bitching about ketchup.

Good diced pickles are exponentially better than any relish.

Relish is just as much of a sugar bomb as ketchup.

Addition by subtraction.

When presented with too many toppings I have a tendency to over do it. By the end, the burger or dog often disappoints. Lately i've been paying attention to better focus. Stick to a couple 3-4 toppings. Mustard is a must for me. As someone already mentioned, ketchup is better with fries but a burger dip or 2 changes those bites up without taking away from the burger.

Same goes with pizza. A loaded supreme can be good but sometimes simpler is better.

Ketchup on a dog, no way. Kraut and pickles/relish, no thanks. Chili and kraut, nope.

I don't see how you can say ketchup overpowers on a hot dog but mustard does not. I find mustard to be one of the most overpowering tastes in any situation. And I like mustard.

Almost none of this makes sense, and the parts that do are wrong. Pickles are the 2nd or maybe 3rd most important addition to a burger.

I'm a mustard, pickle, saurkraut, onion on hot dogs guy, but my dad turned me on to ketchup and saurkraut on them. I like it that way once in a while.

Hot dogs are cheap - try it once.

had some hotdogs yesterday...cheese, ketchup, and mustard. Sadly, I was out of Mrs. Campbell's chow chow.

Ketchup is for kids. Mustard only on hot dogs or corn dogs. I love pickles but won't get mad if they are not on a burger, but they should be.

I'm not a fan of ketchup on either.

My favorite dressing for a burger is mayo, mustard and pickle. Thin sliced tomato too if it's a good one.

I love lots of other burger combos too - cheese, bacon, mushrooms etc - but the simple mayo mustard pickle combo is perfect to me.
