Mixing wasabi with soy sauce

Am I the only one who categorizes this with marinating with Italian dressing and stuffing things with cream cheese? Wasabi and soy sauce are not supposed to be mixed. Dab your wasabi under the fish, lightly, and I mean lightly, swab your fish through soy sauce, and then eat.

whats the difference in doing that?

You sure start some dumb treads.

What's the difference? Seems like you'd be getting the same flavor.
Get over yourself.
Get over yourself.

The difference between mixing and keeping them separate? The taste. The consistency and texture. The first kick of the wasabi, horse radish in most cases, is lost when mixed with soy sauce. Instead of feeling a rush of fire up the sinuses when you eat wasabi as it was intended, you get a mildly spicy soy sauce instead.

Sashimi? I usually dab the radish root in the wasabi, then the soy, then drop that on my fish and grab it all and chow. You rubbing the wasabi on the fish with your hand like the nigiri chefs do to the rice?

I don't use anything when I eat sushi. No dipping and I never, ever eat rolls. Sashimi or nigri only.

Ironic that you're being so snobby about it
Because customarily the Japanese will tell you that you should dip your sushi in enough soy sauce where you can actually notice a difference in weight.
If you're going to preach, then read the book first.

you are making very little sense, if any

Yes, but instead of using my fingers, I use the tip of my chopstick. The correct, historical, and most enjoyable way to eat sushi or sashimi is smear a little wasabi under the fish, lightly dab the top of the fish in soy sauce and eat. When you get to your last chew, cleanse your palate with the pickled ginger.
Rolls? Glassman, I look down on people who eat rolls about the same as those who eat at chain restaurants.

Eh, people like what they like. I don't eat rolls because the true flavor of the fish is masked.

You shouldn't have to use any wasabi, b/c a good roll should (customarily) already have enough wasabi in it. In any case, we don't get real wasabi.
I know what you mean though. People started doing it and it became a fad that took off (similar to sushi restaurants). And I like things stuffed with cream cheese and jalapenos every now and then

True, but this board is notorious for making fun of people who eat food stuffed with cream cheese, foods marinated overnight with Italian dressing, and chain restaurants. Why not add one more dining peccadillo?

Traditionally, you are correct to not mix wasabi and soy sauce for dipping, however, if people enjoy a little heat with their dipping experience, by all means, mix away.
All sorts of etiquette is broken at "Japanese" restaurants. What bothers me the most is the 7 year old kid who's gotten hold of chopsticks and thinks he's Keith Moon.
