No, no, no. It’s either good or bad, no matter conditions. Logic isn’t allowed here.

I have no problem having a piece of king cake just that they are not something worthy of great effort to pursue IMHO.

Doughnuts, cinnamon rolls ect. are just as good---better than many.

Yep. That Courtyard Brewery guy is a great local example.

since you want to bring such irrelevant post to thread perhaps you can tell us why you have not gotten a job in the US making the babies for king cakes given the huge tariffs that are probably on king cake babies.

I was scrolling down in eager anticipation knowing that if people needled OP enough, he'd snap and go straight to tariffs

I've had ones I was told are very good (in Louisiana) and while I certainly won't trash them, they will just never align with the enthusiasm that exists for them in LA. I'd probably take a very good cinnamon roll over the best king cake I've ever had, for example.

I think if most outsiders went into it knowing that plenty of Louisianans admit that the tradition is half the appeal and thus not expecting it to be one of the best things they've ever had - they wouldn't be so disappointed/confused.

Do you suggest the government confiscate all king cakes and instead distribute only government approved desserts?

I continue to stick with my simple brioche style king cakes. The original is McKenzie’s. All others are glorified cinnamon rolls.

I can dig the tradition of them, but I tend to agree that they're overrated. I don't know that I've ever had any of the really good ones talked about on here though. We used to go to Mardi Gras in the 90's and our friend's parents always had some from I would assume one of the local bakeries, but I can't remember.

Get a Dong Phuong king cake, it will change your mind, it is not just a Cinnamon Roll, it is very good. Maurice in Metairie has a very interesting one as well. The rest......ehhhhhh

Most King Cakes are bought for the party (novelty) not as the best tasting cake, but yes, and obviously they can go from very bad to very good.

i'm glad this site admits this now

i've been on this crusade for like 15 years and until just recently people will admit this

they used to pretend like there was some secret mixture and Nola water to make a super special cake mix and it TOTALLY wasn't a cinnamon roll

With crunchy over dyed food colored sugar crystals on top. I personally don't like crunchy cinnamon rolls.

You people are funny with this crap. Call it what you want, but a fresh Manny Randazzos cake or a Haydels cream cheese filled one is pretty damn good and sure as fck is better than a cinnamon roll.
