No it's definitely not duck. You can see it in the meat and taste it to know it's chicken. Best in the world? Not even best in the city. Dempsey's and LL are better. He'll I've had the gumbo at jambalaya shop and sometimes it's better.
All the food at the chimes taste awesome. Especially when you have had a couple beers

225 needs to start thinking about where they are and the city and people they represent. A lot of these picks were slaps in the faces to some great local establishments. MIke Anderson's was by far the biggest joke...
It appears to me that this magazine is voting for places that were popular a decade ago. I am suprised that Giamanco's didn't win best overall restaurant, because I doubt 225 even realized that the place has been closed 6 years. Juban's, though? I'd love to claim the place where I had my college graduation dinner is the best in Baton Rouge, but wow...far cry.
Awful representation of BR. Might as well throw more awards at Ralph and Kackoo's and Cane's. NO wonder people from NOLA think BR food is a joke.
and, consequently, mike anderson's is an advertiser ... i mean, even with the miniscule sampling/number of people that voted (2500 allegedly), there is ABSOLUTELY no way that the majority voted for mike anderson's -- no way .. it is a pick like this that leads me to believe it is skewed ..
totally agree with you comments on juban's (another serious advertiser) as well ... this crap just does nothing but shoot the credibility that 225 has been trying to develop in the foot .. there have been good articles in it in the past and i really liked the light that it shed on BR .. but you have to wonder where unbiased journalistic integrity ends and the influence of the advertising dollar on the editorial content begins when you see crap like this ..

I love the place, but I wouldn't call it the 'best overall restaurant' or in this case, the narrow loser in that category.
In my humble opinion, probably LA Lagniappe would get my vote, although I haven't been there in a while.

have you ever tried to go to mike anderson's from wed night to sunday lunch?
impossible to get a table.

Even with "Black Drum" being the "fish of the day" at Louisiana Lagniappe, it is by far and away the best seafood restaurant in Baton Rouge.
Mike Anderson's isn't even in the top 5 anymore.

the chimes is OK .. that's about it .. i do agree with karma on the duck gumbo .. it is rather tasty .. but i'd stack parrain's (yes, i know, owned by the chimes) up against it any day of the week .. hell, the gumbo at cafe americain isn't half bad either ... the chimes has done an outstanding job over the years of branding themselves and to say they made a solid decision with the chimes east would be the culinary understatement of the century ... along with any branding comes assumptions here and there i guess .. but i just don't find the chimes to be the best of anything in BR anymore .. even the bulldog has taken their pub throne away from them ..

I was joking. The Chimes is what it is. Over priced bar food to go with a great beer selection. Probably wouldn't make my top 10 favorite places to eat in the city (in fact I know it won't) and it sure as hell should never be considered tops in the city. The BR obsession with this place makes my head hurt.

karma, there are a lot of places in BR with average food that are packed on reputation and habit alone ... just because walk on's is packed on LSU gamedays, are you going to assume the food is awesome there ? if you are implying anderson's is the best seafood in BR, you're nuts .. i have way too much respect for your restaurant opinions to think you'd do that ..

THis is very true...I always felt Chimes had a lot to be desired in the bar aspect...good beer selection, but it lacked something in environment.

i honestly don't know how i made it all these years without the bulldog ..
eta: and i think they are taking a helluva chance with this northshore location ..

but that's the thing with the chimes.
all of it's good. From the salmon sandwich to the chicken club to the gumbo to the platters to the ed beans and rice. even the creamy italian dressing on the side salad is good.
It's all good. Calling it bar food is stupid. It's not just nachos and mozzarella sticks.
I might say the Chimes is the best overall restaurant in BR. Because it's good at everything. Good sometimes great food. Great beer and liquor selection Amazing location. Amazing selection of beers. Amazing atmosphere. And good value on what you pay for.
The only thing to nitpick is service. And even that hasn't been as bad as it was five years ago when my hooligan friends ran all over the joint.
Juban's is overpriced, and the last time I ate there it was awful.
Fleming's is overpriced and it's asian fusion garbage calamari
appetizer made me want to hurl.
Louisiana Lagniappe is good, but the quality of their steaks have gone down, and they've started substiutng tilapia for snapper.

I remember when they first changed the setup of the place, moving the bar to the space between the Varsity, I thought it was a great move.
In retrospect, it really lost any semblence of a true bar atmosphere, in doing so.

You didn't know what you were missing

You would be suprised. One of the magazines down here(I think it was Where Yat or N.O. Living) did a similiar poll and got on average less than 10 responses per category. It was just stupid what some of the responses were. The two that stood our were best mexican food. Cucos got #1 and Taco Bell got #2.
I want to say Copelands got best restaurant in the city.
I do not doubt for a second that 225 "added" votes to some of their advertisers.
And on the subject of a place being crowded, means that it is good. That is not always the case at all. Red Lobster and Apple Bees stay packed on the weekends.

no, i was just saying that it's conceivable to me that mike anderson's was voted in by the masses as opposed to written in by the 225 powers that be. Ditto with superior.

I agree with you. Ditto Tsunami.

To say the chimes is good at everything and is the best restaurant in BR is fricking stupid. It's over priced bar food. To even compare it to LL is laughable. To call yourself a food snob and say that is totally contradictory
Posted on 7/6/09 at 10:51 am to LSU Fan 90812
you might be right on that .. and i see what you are saying ... but i think tsunami got an advertiser friendly bump personally, Y.A. .. ichiban and kamado's have fairly avid followings too .. but tsunami has always been a HUGE advertiser in there and have had two or three articles written on them ..
