LMFAO!!!

I've always thought this poll was garbage! Mostly LSU kids I'm guessing. The very first page of the article says that they sent out 8000 surveys, and only 2500 responded.
Sounds like an accurate slice of Baton Rouge's residents. What's the population here? Oh yeah. 428,000 in EBR, 774,327 in The Greater Baton Rouge area.
So these results are based on the opinion of roughly 0.56% of EBR residents. Nice. I just don't pay much attention to it.

No doubt. TA and I, plus Clooney want an NO blog as well. Add Brock Landers and Solo as bloggers in training and all will be good.

Why is this survey bogus? Why do you think there's a correlation between the advertisers in 225 magazine and the winners of the "best of" awards? I'll tell you why:

1. The 8000 surveys they sent out went to subscribers to 225/BRBR and the BR Daily Report newsletter via email.

2. Upon advertising with 225/BRBR, you are encouraged to subscribe to the magazine. If I spent thousands of dollars in advertising, I'd get the magazine to make sure my dollars are well-spent.

I'll give you an example: 2500 votes were actually cast, making up .56% of the population as stated in a previous post.

Juban's received 18% of the vote for Best Overall Restaurant, giving it only 450 votes to claim the title. 450 votes! 450 people responded to the email that they were automatically sent for subscribing to the report and chose Juban's as the best overall restaurant.

There is NO WAY that 2500 people decide the views of roughly 400,000 people in the GBR area. That's like letting ONLY the state of Wyoming decide the president of the United States.

WTF? Best BBQ: TJ Ribs?? Seriously? The ONLY thing that's good at that restaurant is the babybacks. I could give you 3 ACTUAL bbq restaurants that are better.

Best Sushi? Tsunami, I think not. Ichiban is by far the best sushi in BR.

But hey, they advertise with the BRBR and get the automatic emails...

everything you say is interesting .. but i know of two advertisers in last year's issue that got a preferential "bump" in the "voting" ... it is advertiser driven and a great way to hold a gun to people's heads advertising-wise ..

Come on now, don't get too greedy - yall already have some good blogs in New Orleans: Peyton, the Blackened Out boys, God forbid even Father Tom... Eat Drink Nola seems to be doing pretty well too. Plus you have some great blogs from the purveyors of a few different establishments (St. James, Cork and Bottle, Cochon Butcher). I'd like to think BR could support at least two of good quality.

I appreciate what Zombie's blog is trying to accomplish. Though he comes off a little arrogant in what seems to be his desire to be the authoritative food source (even if he claims not to) of Baton Rouge, at least he has an opinion that he has some real convictions with his opinions - which is really all you can ask of a critic. Plus, for the most part, I tend to agree with his reviews.

I think it's a good sign, however, how there at least seems to be a growing movement to have more South Louisiana food blogs out there which actually report personal experiences and true critiques (as opposed to - what at least appears to be - advertising driven reviews in 225). Keep up the good work bloggers.

Oh, my bad on the misunderstanding. Great idea. Hope it works out as this board has pretty much come my go-to for restaurant information in Louisiana.

That really means alot to me that you said that. The hardest part about food writing is trying not to come off sounding arrogant. But it is hard to do because you are trying to tell someone what they should like and dislike. All I want to do is point people in the direction of good, local places that they never knew existed.

how did a thread about a baton rouge magazine's ill-fated rankings of baton rouge restaurants turn into a new orleans restaurant thread ?

Catman that's a pretty good list. My changes would be:
Best Chinese- Oriental Pearl (Government)
Best Vietnamese- Pho Qyuhn
Best Mexican - Taco and Burrito Xpress
Best Latin - La Reyna
Best BBQ - Sonny's (this is a coin flip)
Best Sushi - Waka House
Best New Restaurant - Dingo's

Though a case could be made for all the one's you listed.

First of all, keep in mind whenever rankings/ratings like these come out they are never "right". Don't get your panties in such a wad. It's not a big deal.

Just on the other post this is what I think. It must be incomplete though as I don't see Italian and about 20 other categories...

Anyway, here's my take:

Best New Restaurant - Zea's

It's ok. Haven't been everywhere.

Best Asian - PF Changs

Sketchy at best, but I do like one of their chicken dishes.

Best Mexican - Superior

don't like Mexican, no opinion...well actually it does suck pretty bad.

Best BBQ - TJ Ribs

the only BBQ I like is "fake" BBQ and that's Jay's on Government...a.k.a. THE BOMB (haha. nice oldschool terminology).

Best Gumbo - The Chimes

don't eat gumbo

Best Pizza - Fleur de Lis

this is correct

Best Grilled Fish - Bonefish Grill

a little specific aren't we? don't order grilled fish enough to give an accurate assessment, but i have heard negatives about here.

Best Burgers - Georges

i love george's, but i'll also be the first to say they don't have the best burgers. for me it's byronz bistro and it's not close.

Best Seafood - Mike Anderson's

just NO.

Best Sushi - Tsunami

sushi is weird. it really is. it's mostly about freshness and most restaurants have their ups and downs. they don't put enough emphasis on quality. if they think they can get away with serving something that is ok rather than up to snuff they will. you may have a great experience 9/10 times, but then they'll drop the ball and won't serve you something that is acceptable. anyway, in conclusion, to be honest as much as i eat there's so many places i can't give an honest opinion.
