In order to prove this theory, whitey, just look at last year's poll.
"Best Overall Restaurant
The Chimes
You may be able to tour the world via their beer, but the food is all-American (heavily dominated by South Louisiana, of course). The original is an institution just outside the north gates of LSU, and made The Chimes practically synonymous with the campus. A second location in the ’burbs on Coursey Boulevard, with its tasteful brick facades and old-timber details, feels as though it’s been there for generations. Serving up savory red beans and rice, grilled or fried alligator and some of the best bar food around, The Chimes beat out all the city’s top fine food and gourmet restaurants to earn top honors as Best Overall Restaurant."
Don't get me wrong. My name is on the Around the World board, and I go there often. Best overall Restaurant...In the city... bit of a stretch.
I think that maybe instead of "Best of 225" these awards should be called "Name 3 places you've heard of."
I just don't waste my time giving much credit to the thing. Congratulations to the places that did win; the awards should create some buzz for them.
That's enough from me. It's 1:30 am, and the wife says she wants strawberry cupcakes. I've learned it's best to listen to pregnant women.

MY .02
Best New Restaurant - Zea's
It's new to Baton Rouge, but hardly the best new anything. I don't know who I would vote here, but surely there's better (I am not sure how NEW some of the places I have in mind actually are).
Best Asian - PF Changs
No no no. I don't despise the place like many of you do; there are some good dishes to eat there. It's just a gimmicky place that is hardly authentic Asian. Pho Quin or Sushi Yama or Duang Twan (or however it's spelled) are better and more authentic and flavorful Asian.
Best Mexican - Superior
This is a lazy pick, like when the fans get to vote for the players in the MLB all-star game. La Tienda, Meztizo, La Carrata, among others are much better...and the latter is not even that good. Superior is good for a drink and a nice lively atmosphere.
Best BBQ - TJ Ribs
Jay's is much better. This is just another lazy pick...most people who eat bbq have probably eaten only here.
Best Gumbo - The Chimes
I have never had this dish at the Chimes, but people have said this is actually one of their better apps. I do not eat Gumbo unless it's homemade by my mom, aunt, or another trusted person, so I really do not know. I would guess that Parrain's or LA Lagniappe could make better.
Best Pizza - Fleur de Lis
It's pretty damn good and I usually coat mine with some Asiago. Again, not a food I eat a ton of around here, so I am not sure. I also like Pasttime's Pizza - a dish that most people on here seem to dislike.
Best Grilled Fish - Bonefish Grill
Uh, considering we're in south LA...what in the frick is 225 thinking here? They might as well say Outback has the best steak in town. Parrain's OWNS this place. What a joke. Aside from sme decent apps, this place is very overrated and there are a dozen to 20 places that have better fish than this joint.
Best Burgers - Georges
Another huge miss. Mason's, Riverside Patty, and even the Chimes, for God's sakes, beats George's. Overrated bar food that's too pricey for what it is.
Best Seafood - Mike Anderson's
This is easily the worst vote of all...My God that is an insult to Baton Rouge seafood. Drusilla's, complete with fruit flys and 20 minute beer drink order waits, is 100x better and that says how bad Anderson's really is.
Best Sushi - Tsunami
Amazing what a great view and trendy bar spot can do to the flavor of sushi. I rank them in the middle as far as sushi quality goes. Sushi Yama and Ichiban and even Koi are far better in taste. Again, 225 is voting on trendiness and adverstising.
225 needs to start thinking about where they are and the city and people they represent. A lot of these picks were slaps in the faces to some great local establishments. MIke Anderson's was by far the biggest joke...
It appears to me that this magazine is voting for places that were popular a decade ago. I am suprised that Giamanco's didn't win best overall restaurant, because I doubt 225 even realized that the place has been closed 6 years. Juban's, though? I'd love to claim the place where I had my college graduation dinner is the best in Baton Rouge, but wow...far cry.
Awful representation of BR. Might as well throw more awards at Ralph and Kackoo's and Cane's. NO wonder people from NOLA think BR food is a joke.

Seriously? Best Seafood to Mike Anderson's? That's a HUGE clue that it's horsesh*t. Tony's Seafood is 10 times better than Mike Andersons. You can get a sh*tload of food for under 10 bucks at Tony's and it's all absolutely delicious. Best fried catfish in town.

This was a nail-biter, folks, but ’06 champ Juban’s reclaims their title from last year’s Best Overall, The Chimes, by an oh-so-slender margin of a quarter of a percent.

I think he was saying that parrains is much better, not that they really "own" it

First of all, keep in mind whenever rankings/ratings like these come out they are never "right". Don't get your panties in such a wad. It's not a big deal.
once again .. "panties in a wad" ?? ... overstate much ? don't see how questioning the validity of this poll = panties in a wad ...

i saw someone at sushi yama talking to the owner about advertising in 225. once he agreed, she said she would do an article on him. i think they pay homage to those who pay them.

Might not lead to the best 'results' but it's good business.

quote:i agree with this statement.
225 tries to establish itself as the authority on all that is hip and cool in BR and when it becomes obvious that something like this is at the very least clearly advertising driven ..

The very first page of the article says that they sent out 8000 surveys, and only 2500 responded.
Sounds like an accurate slice of Baton Rouge's residents. What's the population here? Oh yeah. 428,000 in EBR, 774,327 in The Greater Baton Rouge area.
So these results are based on the opinion of roughly 0.56% of EBR residents. Nice. I just don't pay much attention to it.
It isn't that their polling method isn't representative of the general population. It's that the general population isn't really ever an authority on anything. They need to have a panel of about 20 food critics who are intimately familiar with all of the BR restaurants and let them decide.

guys. the duck and sausage gumbo at the chimes is one of my favorite gumbos in the world.
i don't think it's that much of a stretch.

Isn't it not even made with duck?

doesn't matter. it's a good gumbo. and i'm as food snob as it gets. And i have other food snob friends that have to get a bowl when they come back home.
it's very distinctly flavored.

I've been told by a few people who worked there (mind you, this is second-hand info now) that it's chicken in duck broth?
But yeah, it's still really good.

I would have thought that would be a pretty important part of "duck gumbo".

I've never had it, just find it amusing.
