I live in Mid-City and Venizia's is on Carrollton Ave. between Canal and Iberville on the River side of the street.
Their Eggplant Vatican is a very good dish and one of my favorites. I've also had folks tell me their pizza and Muffelatta's are also very good, but I've never tried them.
My wife usually gets the veal with pasta and cream sauce and loves that dish.
We got the fried calamari for an appetizer the last time we were there and I have to admit I've had better. It seemed a bit oversalted, and this is coming from a guy that loves salt.
The food is reasonably priced.

Vincent’s
Pascal Manale’s
Mosca’s
Venizia’s
Mandina’s
Rizzuto’s
Fausto’s
Fury’s
Giorlando’s
Sandro’s
Impastato’s
Irenes
Italian barrel- I never been
Adrea’s- northern Italian, I prefer southern Italian
Two Tony’s- have not been in almost 2 decades
There are a few more but, my question OP what are you looking for specifically in Italian food? Each has a different take and specialty.

I’m surprised Josephine Estelle hasn’t been mentioned yet.

Domenica was my favorite when I lived in New Orleans. I haven't been since Alon split from BRG, so I can't attest to the current state of affairs there.

There are many other fine Italian restaurants that have been mentioned AVO, Josephine Estelle, Dominica, Adolfo’s, Marcello’s, etc. however most of these places are trained chefs focused on a specific Food type and in this case Italian. So, for me when someone asks for New Orleans Italian, this takes me to the style of real southern Italian food that started here many decades ago by real Italian families. Just my opinion.

Tony's nephew opened a place in Metairie called Nephew's. Supposed to be the same as Tony Angelo's. Corner of West Metairie and Clearview
I've been to Nephew's recently. Same food, different names for the food ie lobster cup is called seafood cup etc. The service and atmosphere was not as good as Tony Angelo's but the food was phenomenal.

I used to love Venizia, but their sauces seem to lack flavor now. I think something has changed.
Vincents is probably my favorite now.
I like Adolphos on Frenchmen.
Metaire has an Italian restaurant in every neighborhood.
I've had good meals at a lot.
Fausto's, Impastato and Vincents are the ones we go to most.
On the west bank they have Moscas this is an old place that is old style family service.
Great, but it's in the middle of no where but worth the drive.

This. Of menus I’ve looked at from the places posted, Vincent’s, The Italian Barrel, and Pascal’s Manale stand out over places like Domenica for this reason. Going for authentic Italian cuisine.

Angelo Brocato is probably authentic Italian cuisine, but its only deserts
I don't know if I've been to authentic Italian restaurant in N.O. almost all are "creole-Italian"

I've eaten at Mosca's only a couple times and it was very good food. You're right, it is a little out of the way, but well worth it.

I will get downvotes, but I have always found them to be overrated. It's not bad. IMO it's just not as good as everyone makes it out to be.

I wouldn't downvote anyone for expressing their opinion. Some folks seem to hate some of the things I really like, and that is fine with me.

Nephew's has very limited parking made worse by the fact that they share a building with That's Amore Pizzeria which is not a horrible place, either.
We like Happy Italian Pizzeria. Lenny Minutillo is a really good cook/chef. Most of his dishes are made-to-order, it takes a bit when you eat there. His baked ziti with roasted garlic, gorgonzola, black walnuts and pancetta for $9.00 is the deal of the century, right now. Rich as can be, enough for two, or enough to eat about a third of it and take the rest home.

I hear ya. I don't hate the place at all. Oysters Mosca is awesome.

Loved that the dude would visit tables. One time visited our table, looked at my girlfriends bowl of pasta and said...no hell no... that's not good enough..I'll be back

It's hard to go wrong with Irene's or Vincent's. However, no one has mentioned Paladar 511, and it's excellent. Open style kitchen concept, a little less intimate than your classic Italian restaurant atmosphere.
