re: How is the Baton Rouge Mexican (Tex-Mex) scene so bad? A sensationalized look @ BR Texmex.

When's the last time you went to both? I live in the area and I find myself going to La Carreta much more often.
Superior's tacos remind me of school lunch, their enchiladas leave a lot desired, and the only thing that I've found that was genuinely good was the dry aged and marinated flank steak. They have a menu that caters to a kid's palette.

What in the absolute frick are you ordering?
Couple of entrees, couple of apps and couple of margaritas plus tip and you can easily get there at Superior lol. I might be a little high at the other places but you get my point.

Please tell me what on La Carretas menu is just above and beyond what is on Superiors. Actually just give me a couple items that Superior doesnt have on their menu that la carreta serves.
Catering to a kids 'palette' is about on par with the dingus that drove by Superior and saw them cooking at 9am so that means your food they serve you is 2 days old.

We go to both a good bit and I prefer Superior’s food. Their taco salad is my favorite in BR and I prefer their tex mex and grilled offerings.
Wife likes La Carretta better but that is strictly because of their cauliflower tacos which is the only thing she’s ordered there for the last 3-4 years

I didn't realize how much the La Carreta Bluebonnet menu differs from the Mid City one. I eat at the Bluebonnet one a fair amount since it's close. They do a pretty good job at that one. Their taco variety is much better and is a good deal on Tuesdays.

A couple of entrees and a couple of apps for two people at a Mexican joint?
She's definitely not fricking you after all of that hits her stomach

Tex-mex is like Chinese food, It's the same everywhere.
You need to lower your expectations.
You need to get out more if you think it’s all the same.

Casa Maria, La Carretta, etc and all the ones like it are the same slop plopped down on the plates in a shitty decor modeled after what people in the 80s thought a Mexican restaurant should look like.
lmfao, atleast they dont believe in false advertising. This will run you $30 btw

Why anyone would waste money on chicken fajitas is beyond me.

superior really isnt THAT much more expensive than say Caretta or Blue corn.
Chicken fajitas
Superior 23
Blue corn 17
Caretta 15
53% difference is pretty significant

I was Ok with the BR TexMex choices, even though they all have the same dishes cooked in exactly the same way. Then some close friends moved to the Houston area, we visit them about twice a year and they take us to their favorite TM places. Now I'm ruined for BR TM. However, I like the creativity at Mestizo's, to me it's our best, but I have not been to some of the newer places mentioned.
If you are ever in League City, TX go to Mr. Sombrero and get there early.

That's insulting for $30.

I think La Carreta is good for the Mexi-slop (and I do not mean that as an insult) items. Chimichangas, anything with ground beef, that sort of thing.
Superior is better on the grilled food. You can cut their grilled chicken with a spoon it is so tender, and they brine and marinate it overnight.
The grilled steak items are also nicely marinated and always have good char.
I love Mexi-slop items sometimes too.. just don't really make it out to those places anymore.
Agreed. Especially with their chicken. Before Superior, I thought chicken with Mexican food (instead of beef) was blasphemy.

I got fajitas the other day at Highland and they couldn't have looked more different than that.
I thought this was mid city by how it looks.
I usually get the lunch size (about half price, give or take) and its about that amount of food. My veggies are never raw like that. No idea why on earth they used that photo.

Yea we all agree that plate and pic looks like crap and the person putting that on social media should have those privileges taken away. Also pretty sure thats the lunch size so its not 30. Regardless, that plate looks bad
When I'm sitting at the bar and I see fajitas go by, I never see plates looking like that.

I don't know why this board shits on Mi Padres but they have some of the best beef fajitas/tacos in BR.

I haven’t eaten at Superior in a long time, but I never come into BR without getting the margs.
Don’t know what it is about the margaritas from Superior, but they just hit different.

I’ve always heard rumors that they have everclear in them but have never confirmed
One of the few places I’ll get a frozen marg over one on the rocks.

I’ve heard the same but would strangle a kitten to learn the exact recipe so I can make it at home.
