First smoker?

I've never owned one but I'd like to start.
I want something easy to control. I have a gas grill already.
The 2 I'm looking at so far are a wifi traeger or a big green egg or another kamado. What else should I look at ?

Get a 22 Weber grill and Spider Venom fan.

What do you want to smoke? Start there.
A pellet smoker is a set-it-and-forget-it smoker. But it’s just a smoker, so you’re only going to use it for smoking food.
A big green egg is a totally different grill. You can use it for smoking and grilling. It’s small for a smoker, so you’re only going to smoke a small amount at once. You need to learn how to use but don’t let that scare you off.

Get a cheap 22" Weber kettle to mess around with.
Snake method is super simple for low n slow cooking that requires minimal attention.

the 22" Webber is the best to start with, but you'll be somewhat limited in what you can do as far as size. A full brisket sometimes won't fit, and you can only do 1 maybe 2 racks of ribs. But it is the most versatile smoker/pit you can get, and great to start with. It's great when you are just smoking for about 4 people.
If you want just a smoker, then then Oklahoma Joe barrel smoker is a good starter smoker if you can find a good deal for them.

If you are ok with the $1300 price range, the summit Kamado may be the best one on the market.

Traegers and other pellet smokers are good for beginners. They allow you to get the basics down with smoking. However, it is more fun to learn the basics with everything that comes with a regular charcoal/wood smoker.
I went from a Traeger to a Weber Smokey Mountain and loved the shift and difference. I liked the aspect of pellet smokers that I could leave it and forget. I really like how I can experiment with my smokey mountain with different woods and charcoal.
Just depends on what you want. Do you want easy (pellet) or do you want more challenging (wood fired smokers).

everything weber is over priced. if you want a WSM, buy the knock off walmart sells when they go on sale. If you want a kamado, buy a KJ or a BGE.

I’d check the specs against Green Mountain Grill. GMG is gonna be in the same price range and I think may be better built since Traeger shifted their production overseas. And GMG customer service is unreal.

They are the Toyota of grills. Simple, easy to maintain, last longer than competitors.
I recently replaced a Weber gas grill with a fancy unit from Grilla Grills and wish I had gone with another Weber.
** Recommendations for OP - For ease of use I'd look into pellet or a drum type smoker (WSM, Pit Barrel, Gateway, OK Joe Bronco, etc..)

I would invite you to examine the summit Kamado hands-on. It’s worth every penny of $1300

Couldn't you do the same with the variety of different pellets out there? I went with the pellet because I am definitely a rookie when it comes to outdoor cooking (never had the set-up for one, and friends/family all did).
Could be more burdensome having to clear out the hopper and reload with the new pellets; but am I completely underthinking this?

All the ceramics are easy to control and very efficient. You figure it out quickly, or you can buy a gadget to control the airflow and temp automatically and with a wifi option so you can control it remotely.
I've never used a pellet stove, but some people swear by them.

I learned how to smoke on a 18” WSM. Those turn out some REALLY good BBQ. If you’re looking for something a little more versatile, 22” Weber kettle.

Every smoker worth their weight pops their cherry on a Weber Smokey Mountain. Entry level pricing and a damn good pit.

Can't stress this enough.
eta: what's your price range? Probably should start there then decide if you want the ease of a pellet, ceramic or charcoal/wood. The WSM 22" is a great beginner smoker that many comp guys still use.
