Charcoal's is just okay.

3. Locally produced bread, where available. Bread is often very underrated at burger place.
Agreed.
I find it funny that a lot of places claiming to be the "best burger in town" use a packaged mushy sesame seed bun. I think the bread often makes the burger.

That's a good one! I like some more unusual cheeses.

Respect the onion.
Offer grilled onions and onion rings. Preferably thick cut so you get the actual onion taste.

Side options should be more than just fries and onion rings. Mushrooms, dill pickles, and green beans are all excellent breaded and fried.

use quality bacon and as others have said, an assortment of cheese options. I also like caramelized onions on my burger.

Twisted Root does most of this.
I love that joint.

- Need at least three different cheese options. Maybe Cheddar, Blue and Swiss.
- Need Bacon as an option.
- Need Tater Tots
- Need chili as an option.
- Need a slaw burger for the hippies
- Need in house made, flour breaded, not batter dipped onion rings.
- Need fried mushrooms and fried pickles
- Need a pool table
- Need Bacon as an option.

Huh ? It's a burger joint not a sushi bar.

Need firm bread that will hold up to the strength you must have to hold a half pound burger with 5 different veggies, 6 strips of bacon and 3 slices of cheese. Nothing worse than taking your first bite and the bread's calling apart already

Never been to Charcoal's. It looks nice from the outside. I can't imagine how much money they put in building that building that I never seem to see anyone in,though.
On a similar vein, the architecture of Company Burger is horrid, but I love the place.

I think a decent burger joint also has buffalo meat. But its not an essential requirement. But I will almost always order buffalo over beef due to lower saturated fat and it tastes just as good (if done well).
I would also say they need more than just fries. got to have somethng extra for the fries.

It's a no-frills front loaded parking strip center, but I enjoy sitting at the bar and watching them cook. I used to bypass Company and head to High Hat, but I've swung back the other way and eat at Company much more than High Hat. Single, no pickles, and sweet potato fries. It's always a little more rare than well.

Are we talking about Charcoal's? I've never been in there. Looking at the menu, however, I'm not sure why. Elk? Bison? Antelope? Plus your standard options as well as veggie? That's pretty awesome. I'm definitely gonna give it a shot, screw architecture.
As for what it should, definitely fresh ground beef that's cooked to order. That's easily #1. Ground in house.
In addition to that, house made stuff. I want my pickles to be legitimate pickled cucumbers, not some Vlasic bullshite. And then have an option to fry those bad boys. Fried slices, not spears.
Ideally the place will include a bar with craft beer taps as well, but I think that about every establishment.

With all the bread talk, the second most important thing IMO is a jalapeño sweet bun. Those make average burgers top notch burgers.
