My wife and I prefer to eat at the bar. Get to know the bartenders, get some free drinks

No middle man to get you a drink.

I usually eat at the bar if it's just me or me and one other person. Everything is faster.

As pretty much everyone here has said, I don't mind eating at the bar if it's just my wife and I or if it's just a few friends (no more than 3 or 4). It kinda just depends on how the bar area is set up, sometimes a few more than 4 could work too.
I eat at bars with my friends, especially during football season and sometimes we have more than 3 at the bar and it isn't a big deal.

I refuse to wait more than 15-20 minutes for a table, so I'll always opt for the bar if it's an option with no wait. Actually prefer it, but the wife hates it.

IMO, bartenders tend to be more knowledgeable than the wait staff about both food and drink on average. They tend to be more senior.

Same. There are quite a few places where I prefer the bar. Especially if we aren't there for a big app + 2 entrees meal. It for some reason feels more acceptable to split just one app at the bar than it would at a table.

Local seafood restaurant that if you eat in the dining room can involve a 30-45min. wait.
I eat there for the food, not the service/atmosphere. Honestly, my wife and I have better conviviality with the bartender than we have ever had with the waitstaff. They're busy.
Even though there is a "poled off" area where customers can order drinks, his livelihood is off of tips where there is quick turnover. When it gets too crowded...2-3 deep, we give up our seats.
An aside, my wife pays the bill here. She was a waitress while a teenager. I don't wanna know, I really don't care.
We walk in now and don't even order. Sit down. Double Jack and Coke in a tea glass, blackened sea bass/mahi, loaded baked potato, spinach salad with ranch for me, pinot and an appetizer off the butcher paper menu for her.
We know about each others children/grandchildren.

The bar is the way to go if it isn't a "table required" kind of occasion. It's quicker, the bartender tends to be much more attentive to your needs, orders go straight to the kitchen from the bar's POS terminal with zero time for a waiter to forget it or frick it up on the way to send it to the kitchen, and it's a bartender; they just tend to be better when dealing with customers than waiters.
For lunch when I'm on the road, I don't even bother with the hostess station anymore. A quick "I'm just going to sit at the bar" and a smile, and I'm on my way.

I love eating at the bar. My wife and I do it all the time even if there isn't a wait.

I've done it many times when alone or if just the wife and I. I'd not do it if there were more than just her and I.
When heading down to the Parish to go to Rocky & Carlos, the wife and I will sometimes sit at the bar to order instead of waiting in their long line to order when folks are looking for a table.
I've also done it many times at Parasol's in the Irish Channel. Sit at the bar, order the roast beef po-boy and have a few beers.

Are you saying you don't like free drinks?
Also, this isn't necessarily the case. If I'm given free drinks, I tip the normal percentage on whatever my bill's subtotal is, plus the cost of the free drink. If I had been charged for the drink, I'd have paid for the cost of the drink PLUS I'd have tipped that same percentage on the higher subtotal. So getting the free drinks still saved me a few dollars while also hooking up the bartender.
Win-win for both parties.

We do it a fair amount.
I just wish everyone would universally use bar foot rails.

This is my choice when dining alone (esp for business travel)
Same here. Best choice where your server isn't allowed to leave the area. Usually 3 or 4 people back there including bar backs.

Any more than that, it's awkward talking across people and looking sideways for an entire meal.
I agree... You also have to take into account the amount of spacing at the bar... I cant stand to be crammed in while trying to eat...

Almost always sit at the bar when available. the bartenders are going to give you the best service/send you in the right direction. If they know you and you bring a date in they will make sure to take care of you

When I travel alone, I'll opt for dinner at the bar most every time. I don't feel comfortable taking up a busy restaurant's table or a server's rotation just by myself. Besides, there's usually good conversation struck up with the bartender shedding light on the city that I'm visiting.
