Could specialty hot dog restaurants be the next big trend?

Kind of like specialty hamburger places you see everywhere? I thought we would see lots of places like Dat Dog popping up. It is a high profit margin item, low labor costs and something you can prepare quickly. Is there just not a big enough market for it? I would think they would do really well in touristy areas and beach towns.

Seems like there was a run on there a few years ago and it died down.

You can vary a hamburger more than you can a hot dog. Plus there is a natural side item in french fries.

I'm all for more hot dog places though. I really enjoy them.

I can see it being a great business model for food trucks.

We've had this run. Wouldn't mind seeing it come around again.
If for nothing else the entertainment value of baws bitching about how expensive a hot dog place is.

The $10 hot dog hurdle is much more difficult to get over than the $10 hamburger one.

Is Frankie's still doing well in BR? Used to get by there every now and then, always enjoyed their dogs.

Different cuts of beef
Different cheeses
Different buns/bread
Thick patty or thin patty
Toppings - Both have a wide variety but hamburger probably edges out due to wide flat surface

This is probably spot on, Dat Dog likely does well in New Orleans because they can rely on tourism putting fresh faces through the door.

Likewise, the one in Lafayette flopped hard because despite being in a great location they were having to rely on locals coming back often. Lots of people, myself included, felt it a bit tough to drop ~$50 on 2 hotdogs, an order of fries, and 2 beers.

I enjoyed the Lafayette location but it was way overbuilt and definitely too expensive. If a regular dog with mustard/relish etc costs the same as one with cornbread dressing or crawfish, that is a problem.

They are permanently closed. Not sure when that happened.

You can't. It can either be pork or beef but you start going too far out of the box and it's not a hot dog anymore but some other type of sausage.

Also cheese doesn't really work on a hot dog unless it also has chili on it
