I'd rather go some place that I don't have to wear overalls, don't have any.

I guess that is where I note the difference between a thread about "favorite" restaurant vs "best" restaurant.
If you would bring in food writers/critics, etc from all over the country and sent them to evaluate 15-20 of what people thought were the best restaurants in the state, I promise the Dinner Bell wouldn't be on any of their top ten list.
At places like City Grocery, Mary Mahoney's, etc, you have chefs that cook some pretty special items and they have skills. The decor in these places are special. The wines are good. There are good bar tenders and qualified servers.
This is not to knock the Dinner Bell, but just my idea of how "best" gets noted.

Have y'all tried the Sycamore House, Confusions, or the Old Cuevas Bistro? Those are my favorite coastal joints.

I think there needs to be a Miss restaurants thread...similar to the small town LA thread...
I would be happy to contribute in the Delta and Jackson areas...anyone think this is a worthwhile endeavor.
There are so many good small town places in MS...

There are? Please enlighten me TA. I don't mean that dreadful bland non-cuisine called "country cooking" which features chicken & dumplings as its signature dish
I tried Leatha's, authentic BBQ but the sauce was way too sweet, cloying, teeth rotting sweet. Most of the other good places in Miss. imitate New Orleans, i.e. Crescent City Grill. Also have tried Chesterfield's and Front Porch in Hattiesburg.
I have to travel to B'ham all the time, so if you know some good places near either the I-55 to Jackson to Medidian route, or the I-59, please let me know. I'd appreciate it.

Here is the problem...most of the good eateries are either in Oxford or the Delta.
Vicksburg and Natchez also have some good ones.
I-59/I-55 is mostly devoid of good food.
I went to Broma's yesterday in Brookhaven...descent deli. I read good things about Rusty's, but it was only open for dinner Thurs-Sat. If you try it out let me know...I read some good reviews online. Mitchells's was next door to Broma's and I would like to try it out.
Jackson is full of excellent lunch deals and good restaurants...do you ever have to eat there or the Delta? I can help a lot with these two.

Thanks anyway, we only go thru Jackson in off hours because of traffic & contruction and I hate get off the interstate to deal with it. You are right, after you get north of Hattiesburg it is desolate till Atlanta. That Mudtown Cafe I rec to you last year is one of the few in B'ham I bother with.

Yeh it was a good place....full of Aubbies though.
There is a good thai place according to my gf...I will have to get the name for you.
Brookahven has some potential, but the 59 corridor is awful.
ETA: Chuck's Fish in T-town is pretty good.

has anyone mentioned the gas stations near oxford that have THE best chicken, steak, and other assorted meats on a stick? i was told with a straight face that the steak they use is of the same quality of any top steakhouse i have ever been to, just served without the pretension....which is just ironic in and of itself.
God, i hate ole miss.

like what?????
I know The Fish Fry and Bowies in Brookhaven are really good but they are not nice restaurants.
There is a little antebellum home just north of Brookhaven in Wesson called Porches that is fantastic.

Porches is the best in the Brookhaven area. Leatha's is the best barbecue I've had, possibly anywhere. My favorite is probably Nicks in Jackson. I think Jackson is a little underrated for good food. But I never go to the delta or the coast.
If it was like the travel channel or food network I would. There used to be a place in Brookhaven called the round table that was just like it but better food.

As for the guys mentioning Brookhaven, which is my hometown. There arent too many choices for good places to eat there. I do like Broma's Deli and Bowie's Bar-b-que.
Brookhaven is helb back from having good places to eat due to the city/county's ban on alcoholic beverages.

This place is MONEY! Love everything they make here! Their pineapple caserole is delish as is their twice baked potatos and fried catfish.

you need to GTFO & GFY IMHO if you think Brookhaven can't sell alcoholic beverages.
You must haven't been to your "hometown" in many years.

Brookhaven can only sell BEER! There are only about 2 or 3 places in town that even sell beer. Its a shame that you cant order a margarita at a mexican resaurant in your hometown. There is no HARD ALCOHOL/Liquor served in Brookhaven or Lincoln county.
And DanMullenisourman, YES i have been to my hometown recently, was there last weekend as a matter of a fact.
