I’ll begin by saying that I find the interest in this city from people who don’t live in San Francisco extremely fascinating.

As someone who has lived in San Francisco for 16 years now I can say that much of what is happening currently in Downtown SF is related to the series of smash mob style robberies that has been occurring in the Bay Area recently, although some buildings were partially boarded up dating back to the lockdown of 2020.

Things that are somewhat worse over the last 2 years:

homelessness has definitely increased but its not all that shocking to me given the economic downturn associated with the pandemic.

some crime #s, but if you look at comparisons to prior year this isn’t as large as what’s been made of it.

Overall downtown was hit hard by the pandemic and the fact that people left the area to work remotely. I biked to downtown to work at our office—as I’ve done once a week for the last 3 months or so—and its clear that things are picking back up with more people going into the office. With that said, most workplaces here are hybrid or full time remote so I’m not sure the Financial District will be what it was for some time.

I can say that crime isn’t something that I worry about and isn’t something that my friends and I discuss when we hang out. It’s not something I consider when making plans and isn’t something that impacts my day to day life or the life of my family of 4.

As with most things, there is some truth to these type of stories but also some hyperbole. People have spoke of California’s (and San Francisco’s) demise for years, but the world’s 5th largest economy (and the center of the tech world) continues to chug along and is set to have a $31 billion surplus at the state level and a $150+million surplus at the state level.

State and local officials have allocated surplus funds and federal funds to address homelessness and that is definitely something that needs to done and done properly. Beyond that, housing costs need to be addressed but I can say that the pandemic caused—at least temporarily—rental and mortgage prices to drop. However, rents are still high AF and houses are still being bought with cash above asking price so this place can’t be all bad, right? The weather, the parks, the surrounding areas (wine country, Tahoe, Yosemite, etch), the food, the beer, the herb, the diversity, and many other things will continue to draw people to live here.

California was given almost 50 billion dollars by the federal government back in March to bailout its unfunded liabilities.

Its surplus is massive because of Nancy Pelosi, not because of fiduciary policy.

And San Francisco is a disgusting city in every sense of the word, but mostly because of the people who live there.

I used to travel there for work all the time from 1994-2008. It was becoming a shthole already back then.

Now it is putrid, dirty, lawless, and massively overpriced. It is a socialist wet dream. It's only going to get worse...much worse.

Won't happen. The homeless racket is one of the bigger money making scams in this state

Nah, you simply lack the imagination to figure out where the looters are going next. Now that they see there’s little to no consequences from it and they’re getting organized.

As for “doing something about homelessness properly” it would help if you had some vague clue what that was.

Hint: Subsidizing it and excusing it aren’t it. If you subsidize something you get more of it, if you excuse it they keep doing it.

And California will continue to be the state where only the uber rich and poor can afford to live in.

I guess brown people aren't all that bad as long as they stay out of the lily white parts of the state and continue to do your menial tasks for cheap.

ETA: Diversity?

There is no diversity in San Francisco. There is only the hive mind.

i'm not defending what's going on in the bay area or California as a whole, but this is funny when you consider half of these people live in Baton Rouge

Scruffy is interested and cares because you progressives are like locusts.

It would not be an issue if the flow of individuals was towards these progressive utopias, but it isn’t.

The flow is outwards to feed off of other areas, turn them into rehashes of the places they ran from, before the locusts move on to somewhere else.

If these locations were such wonderful places to live, why aren’t people flocking to live there?

Progressives should stay in their utopias and leave everyone else alone.

Y'all just passed a $1 billion/year tax in the city a few years ago specifically for this. Are you telling me that a billion dollars a year dedicated to bums isn't enough?

Goddamn, you people are incredible

Dude when you rent a car at SFO they have a huge pre-written speech about how to properly hide things in your car so the windows don't get smashed. Not talking about the out of control property crime is exactly how the city has started sucking so bad. You get what you vote for though so hope you enjoy the boarded up windows and car break ins.

Every major city faced the pandemic, yet very few have seen the dramatic and negative changes SF has. There is a reason for that, and much of your post feels like "explaining it away".

I'm sure it feels like people will always want to move there, it'll always be great and desirable, etc...but I liken your attitude to sports teams who think they will always be good and can't imagine it taking a turn for the worse despite their stars aging, salary cap issues, front offices getting lazy...and then all of the sudden they suck and are super surprised.

Its just so hard to believe a once gorgeous city has turned into a shithole in such a very short time.

It starts in San Fran and LA, then moved across the country. progressives are like locusts.

I guess you don't realize that 99% of homeless are homeless because of their dependency on drugs, do you? And almost 0% of homelessness has to do with someone losing their job due to economic downturn, right? Why don't you do some research since you are a San Fran resident, and listen to Michael Shellenberger and you might understand some of the root cause of homelessness. (He was also on Rogan's podcast if you dont want to read).

Hint: Poor choices, and no accountability/punishment for those choices.
