The city council passed a bill that bans traffic stops for minor violations, such as having a broken taillight or not having certain stickers displayed. Drivers who are guilty of those minor violations will instead receive a warning or a citation in the mail.

quote:

“So that an expired license plate or fuzzy dice in the mirror isn’t a death sentence that it can be in some cases,” said Councilmember Curtis Jones Jr., who is a co-sponsor of the Driving Equality Bill.

quote:

Jones said the city reviewed 2.8 million stops and found that Philadelphia police pull over a disproportionate number of black drivers for minor violations.

quote:

“People of color were found to be three times more likely to be stopped by police, and in particular ZIP codes, in areas, for traveling through non-minority areas,” Jones said.

I’m actually ok with this. Stop the pretense of pulling people over for truly a victimless crime just in hopes of catching a bigger one.

Getting pulled over by a cop isn’t typically fatal unless you have a real retard like the guy in Minny who shot the woman for no reason.

What tends to happen is that someone who already has warrants out on them gets pulled over and gets desperate because they don’t want to go back to jail.

Of course, the easy way to fix that is STOP BREAKING THE LAW ASSHOLES!, but it is apparently racist to think people could actually follow the law.

They need to worry about walking down the street in certain neighborhoods being a death sentence. How many blacks have been killed in Philadelphia this year by other blacks? How many blacks have been killed this year by police officers?

quote:

They'll just pull people over for driving suspiciously or speeding. This is virtue signaling, nothing more.

The cops will tail them for a little while then stop them when they inevitably run a stop sign or red light.

This is just stupid. Maybe it's because the police patrol high-crime zip codes creating more interactions with black and "people of color" who, apparently, can't take care of their business. Besides, there are county sheriffs' deputies, township police officers, and state troopers who will gladly pull them over for these infractions once they're outside the city limits of Philadelphia.

Sometimes government accidentally does the right thing, but for the wrong reason. This is one of those times.

There are more productive things for cops to be doing rather than playing road pirates.

Is it? How frequent if ever? So they are saying that occasionally people are getting shot and killed on routine traffic violations? Are these rare/nonexistent occurrences more frequent than cops getting killed for just being cops?

This is such an intentionally dishonest statement.

The next step is for all police, DA, courthouse, and public defender revenue to come from dedicated property or sales taxes and not from any police activities, sales of seized assets, citations, or fines levied. Then, we can eliminate those pesky for-profit prisons.

Police departments getting a "cut" of ticket revenue inevitably leads to police forces prioritizing which laws to enforce based on budgetary concerns rather than public safety.

I'm fine with this. Most generic pull overs aren't for safety, they are for revenue.

and that's 100% because of the FACT that people of color are consistently at the bottom of the barrel because their own doing. it's NO ONE else's fault, but their own.

stop glorifying hip hop "culture" which is absolutely terrible. hip hop culture is low IQ, morally bankrupt, and overall pure stupidity.

start demanding greatness. stop accepting stupidity and pure ignorance as the "norm".

Stop breaking the laws then arguing with the cops and resisting.

Stop screaming racism and victim when they break the law.

Then, and only then will they stop being massacred on an hourly basis.

Imagine getting a ticket for expired tags and that sum of money being a "death sentence"
Or are they like well it's not fair to get pulled over for a tail light and then get arrested cause you already have warrants out.

I hope Democrat politicians in Philadelphia get t boned by a car missing headlights.
Missing lighting on vehicles is a safety hazard.
So, we're gonna force a vaccine on people to allegedly protect everyone, yet not care about an issue that literally is there for safety of others.

Why do we even have a traffic offense for something hanging from your rear view mirror?

Instead of not enforcing expired plates, how about making plate renewal much more affordable?

Do away with inspection stickers.

These types of actions will do more good than "don't enforce the law."

Downtown Philly is like a scene out of Mad Max with all the 4-wheelers and ATVs on the streets.

I was on a jury for a murder charge where the assailant was pulled over for a non-working taillight. It was upon the stop that the police officer saw blood marks on the outside of the car and looking into the back seat through the window saw a pillow case with blood on it.

With a search warrant, they found it was full of money, and a 10", blood covered Bowie knife. It wasn't until two days later that the murder victim was discovered and another two days before they concluded this was the guy.

Had that small violation traffic stop not occurred the dude would have disappeared into Chicago or some other location.
