British man facing 25 years in jail after police found cannabis in his car

A British football coach has been jailed for 25 years in Dubai after police found a cannabis oil in his car. The 24-year-old claims he was forced to sign a confession written in Arabic despite not speaking or reading the language. Hood claimed the oil was left by a friend who had been visiting from England two weeks earlier. His legal team said he cracked after four days of pressure and signed a confession after being told: "If you do not sign, you will never leave CID [criminal investigation department].".

This is why I don’t understand how places like that get the tourism they do. I get that there’s more money there than anywhere on earth, but just the chance some shite like this could happen and be acceptable to the citizens of that country is more than enough to keep me away.

Does it really? 25 years for a first offense for just some cannabis oil. Give me some recent links. Usually it’s people who have multiple strikes against them and they aren’t forced to sign a confession in a language they don’t know.

You can get 5 years in Florida jail for it. Middle Eastern practices/thoughts are the same as Christian conservatives here in the US. They just take it to the extreme over there.

Dubai has a litany of stupid strict laws. A former co-worker took a job there a few years ago and they started her transfer with an in-person meeting on laws and punishments that lasted a couple hours.

Maybe don’t go to the Middle East if you’re a European or American. I would love to visit Israel one day, because of all the history there, but I don’t know if it’s really worth going into that region of the world right now. They are strict as hell down there, not to mention none of those people like us, and I’d be worried about being captured by some terrorist group.
