Dress codes are becoming more and more relaxed. Before we started working remotely, our dress code was basically non-existent.-even gym shorts were OK. Any company that wants young talent is going to be pretty tolerant if at all possible.

Yeah, and it's not like I'm refusing to wear to wear formal clothing and defying my boss. I just figured my boss creates the rules and she obviously is ok with things being informal, so why not take advantage of the opportunity to be informal on a Friday?

Do you really need advice on how to handle this situation?

Who has control over you getting paid? Your coworker or boss?

Do what your boss says. If the coworkers tell you different, just say "okay" then keep doing what you are doing. If it becomes a problem your boss should then come to you an address it.

Since you are new are you sure your coworkers are not fricking with you? New people always gets fricked with (well, I guess it depends on the industry you are in but do you work with a bunch of dudes? If so, then they could be fricking with you. If you were new and I knew you would listen to me, I would tell you a bunch of shite just to see how far you would go).

We are supposed to wear at least Jeans and a polo shirt, but sometimes I just wear shorts and shut my office door on the days I'm not really caring. I've been here over a decade though.

Completely depends on the employer. My office dress is pretty damn casual as well. We don't go as far as to allow gym shorts and sandals but t-shirts and jeans (without holes) or khakis are just fine.

The only time that changes is when we know a client is coming in.

This. I’ve been wearing golf clothes (shorts, collared shirt, tennis shoes) for forever. But we’re a sales office so we hardly ever see anyone. If customers or mgt come to town we dress more professionally.
But generally if customers come to visit, we’re golfing anyway so it’s the same shite.

I would agree with you coming into the job 100%, but I mean, my boss said something completely different.

To me this is the key ... the boss might say something. But what are they wearing? If they are wearing shorts. Go with it. If they are in jeans, that is your standard.

No shite.

The company I worked for in Plano in 1999-2001 was a reputable tax and appraisal software company. Unless we had clients coming to the office or visiting clients, EVERYONE wore shorts when it was not Winter.

Our owner(my boss) brought us Whataburger Taquitos every Friday morning too.

I've worked in plants for last 20 years and it's untucked polos and jeans EVERY single day. Unless you're a manager/exec. And they get paid a LOT so I'm sure they don't mind.

It's amazing what some of you think is "normal" b/c of your bubble.

I'm currently wearing a soccer jersey and shorts, which is what I'm typically wearing unless I'm on a customer call, but I've been working from home for 18 months.

If I was in the office, I'd dress way different on a Friday.

I'd wear a Saints jersey and jeans.

Nobody gives a frick what I wear. If somebody has time to pay attention to (and comment on) what I'm wearing, they must need more shite to do.

Glad to see people at your work are paying attention to the important shite and not pesky things like "revenue."

I’d listen to the boss, there is a reason they didn’t promote the coworker who is telling you what you are doing wrong..

Cmon bro, is this your first big boy job? I wouldn’t wear shorts to work even if everyone else was. Be an adult. Also tell your co worker to frick off

So you have office hours or something on Fridays, but not class?

That sounds fine. Nobody sees you anyway and your students don't give a flying flip. In fact, you're probably lucky that they are decent and it's likely some of them are in pajamas.

Not sure yet if this is evident of workplace dysfunction,

People will tell you it is, but every organization bigger than 10 people has this somewhere within. The best organizations I've ever worked with, that were absolutely stacked with amazing leaders, still had duds somewhere within who didn't lead their teams properly or had weird conflict like this.

I'd say it's evidence of team dysfunction, though, certainly. Sounds like your boss and this person have unresolved conflict, which to me means either your boss is oblivious or they're intentionally not resolving it, both sort of an issue

Overall it's really not your problem to solve, if it comes up again with your coworker just say "Boss told me this is good" and move on, anyone that actually cares that much about dress code in 2021 is either a boomer or a salesguy and no one cares about either

Has the coworker been involved in showing you the ropes as you acclimate to the new job? Could very much be not so much him being a dick but rather just trying to help you fit in.

Which leads to the next question....can't you just look around the office on Fridays and get a sense for the dress code? Why would you need anyone to tell you? If no one else is wearing shorts, even if your boss told you you could, why would you want to stick out like a sore thumb?

Just use some common sense, man.

Last Friday (she's not in the office today), I didn't look at boss' pants, but I know she was wearing a jersey. I think a very fair thing to do that I think would probably not ruffle any feathers while not cowering to this coworker would be to wear long pants and a nicer t-shirt. I think that would be a good solution.
