Boss Tells You One Thing, Coworker Says Another?

I started a new job not too long ago and I guess I'm just noticing a pattern of coworkers and the boss not being on the same page at all.

For instance, today a coworker basically told me what I was wearing to work on a Friday was unacceptable. Which I would have understood more, had the boss a couple weeks ago not told me that an even more relaxed dress code than what I was even wearing was acceptable. The reason Friday dress code even came up was because the boss saw what I was wearing on a Friday a couple weeks back and was basically like, "You don't need to be wearing those formal clothes."

And there's been a couple other times too where it seems like the boss and a coworker weren't on the same page at all. Not sure yet if this is evident of workplace dysfunction, but it's definitely something that caught my eye. It's worth noting that the boss is newer than everyone else in the department right now besides the new hires.

Has this happened to anyone else? How did you handle it?

Sounds like someone is pissed they didn’t get promoted and trying to pull rank they don’t have.

Being underdressed is like smelling. Meaning if even one person thinks you’re underdressed that’s one person too many.

A t-shirt and khaki shorts. I was told by the boss that even gym shorts were available on a Friday (as it's not typically a day that people in my field see many/if any of their clients), and while I was surprised with this, I thought it would be fine to wear khaki shorts if this was the Friday expectation given to me by my superior.

I see it all the time in major corporations, even before covid and WFH.

Look, I was shocked about it too. I had on a typical day's outfit a couple Fridays ago, which is what even started the conversation on Friday dress in the first place. I think I will probably at least start wearing pants since shorts did seem a bit too casual for the workplace, but I mean, if the expectation from the boss is that casual, I just thought I'd rather be comfortable while I work.

I don’t even wear shorts in an indoor social setting unless it’s a vacation or leisure activity.

I would agree with you coming into the job 100%, but I mean, my boss said something completely different.

Oh boy, I had a collared shirt but I was pretty much wearing khaki shorts, sandals, and sunglasses when I was going into the office. Now, I am the only person on my floor going in so unless someone stops me on the elevator, I felt fine
