Has the coworker been involved in showing you the ropes as you acclimate to the new job? Could very much be not so much him being a dick but rather just trying to help you fit in.
Which leads to the next question....can't you just look around the office on Fridays and get a sense for the dress code? Why would you need anyone to tell you? If no one else is wearing shorts, even if your boss told you you could, why would you want to stick out like a sore thumb?
Just use some common sense, man.
Not as much as others, but kind of? She's been nice so far and I don't think meant any harm, just was probably being a little nosey and not minding her business.
In terms of the office, first off, there's only one other male in our department. Second, because my boss saw what I was wearing a couple Fridays ago (which was more formal) and basically was like you don't need to be wearing that. Wear whatever you want as long as it's not ripped. So, you can see how that gives off the impression that basically whatever you wear is totally fine.

You could, but then they might also become your boss one day.

I'm not anyone's boss at work and I always tell new people shite that isn't true. Hell some people thought I was their bosses boss for months.

Business casual is always safe.

On the dress code thing... probably just a coworker being a busy body.
Where I would be concerned is if your co-workers are telling you the only way to get something done is to do it unethically. That does happen and you need to run if it does.

Tell co-worker, "sorry, I'm kinda new here. Would you be so kind as to show me this requirement in the employee handbook?"
If said requirement exists, thank co-worker for setting you straight. If so inclined flip him off when he turns his back.
If said requirement does not exist, tell boss "we need a documented dress code for casual Friday to avoid shorts shaming."
If said handbook does not exist, it's open season. Do what your boss tells you.

When it comes to your job, I think the safe thing to do is.. at the minimum where blue jeans, tennis shoes and a collared shirt. No shorts, no flip flops, no t shirt, etc...

Has this happened to anyone else? How did you handle it?
if your coworker is above your rank then follow his advice
because the boss will never remember or defend you saying he said it was ok, they never do
also dont piss off your coworkers because they can and will make you regret it every day if you do
