Trying to remember the name of a book - clues inside

Read it when I was a kid
All I can remember is that it was set in WWI or WWII and the main character was a dreamer, constantly lost in his thoughts. At the end book, he is in a foxhole (iirc) and started daydreaming (about a bird I think) and then ended up getting shot in the head
Anybody know the name of this book?

Are you thinking of the scene with the butterfly? He reaches toward it and gets shot by a French sniper.

All Quiet on the Western Front.
Edit: LCA beat me to it!
Also, WWI, not WWII....
OP, there is also a 1970's movie about this, and it stars Earnest Borgnine (sp?) and Richard Thomas (John Boy Walton).
Not a bad movie if you can find it.
The book is a good thought provoking read.

Sergeant York
Alvin Cullum York (December 13, 1887 – September 2, 1964), also known as Sergeant York, was one of the most decorated United States Army soldiers of World War I.[1] He received the Medal of Honor for leading an attack on a German machine gun nest, gathered 35 machine guns, killing at least 25[2] enemy soldiers and capturing 132 prisoners.

First thing that comes to mind for me is All Quiet on the Western Front.

Would have been a perfect thread to pop your book board cherry and get a reply to this thread two days from now.
