Is it some kind of ‘wick puller?’ Heat the spike, stick it through a wax block and attach piece of wick and pull through?

So that's why they call it a wick.

Nope.
It is a whale oil lamp, or what was commonly referred to as a Betty Lamp. It could burn any oil or tallow. The wick was long and laid in the oil/fat and came out the spout part with a length of the wick outside the oil.
The spike was used to hang the lamp from a beam or log wall/ceiling. Some of them, particularly later types, were covered like the one in this video:
Lighting a Betty Lamp (YouTube)
And if you would like to learn one way they were traditionally lit, Paul Sellers will tell you about the Spill Plane:

It’s a scale
Oops wrong! Oil lamp, wick lays in the notch.
I should have known. There is a similar one that is several thousand years old in a synagogue I once visited.

Churches are one place that really developed lighting throughout the centuries. Those lighting designs/advancements found their way into the homes of the average person. They kept the local blacksmith busy. Here's another interesting type:

Except that it's not.

I’m amazed the OP didn’t know this. They did not pay attention in 6th grade science class.

I've always been amazed that such a small flame can melt enough of the wax to use as fuel.

The candles are just wonderful! And, in my opinion, it does not matter what the mechanism of their action is. Candles should create a unique atmosphere of comfort and tranquility. I often have candlelit family dinners with my husband. Such evenings bring us closer and allow us to relax. It's great to use Gracie Moon Scents(LINK /) at home, as their scents are unique and inimitable. By the way, you can use the scents of candles to cheer up or vice versa to relax. There is a lot of information on the Internet about what flavors you need.

The heat from the candle melts the wax which travels up the wick. It's the wax is burned. #Science
How'd I do?

You can also put that hot wax on your skin and hits hurts but also feels good.

This is redundant. Also, my poots are unique and inimitable. Call me to make a candle. The world needs to smell my brand.

initially the wick burns and melts the wax. Melted wax wicks up the wick and is the fuel for the fire
