The thought of moving is one of the reasons I'm still in the house I bought in 92.

Not only do I have a 2 story house full of furniture, I also have a woodworking shop full of big shop tools, tons of power and hand tools for home repair and mechanic work, accessories for them and the requisite clamps, shop vac, ladders, etc., etc., etc.

Then there's the many potted plants between porches and the patio and the back shed full of stuff that I don't want in my shop and lawn equipment.

And with my main living area on the 2nd floor, that is where most of the heavy furniture is located.

Hell, I've just got too damn much stuff. I know for sure if I moved today I'd fill a 40 ft. semi-trailer and then some.

Chances are I'm hiring someone next time I move since I'm now 68 and the wife don't retire for another 4 years or so.

When I bought my first home we had to move out of our rental on canal Blvd. They pushed our closing back a week due to Hurricane Isaac. So Isaac rolled through, flooded the street, and left us without power for ten days all while we had to pack up and move. It was hell.

Hell yea it was. But just about everything I owned could fit in a large duffel bag except furniture.

I worked for a moving company for 2 years the summer before college. It was a great workout but that was about all it was. I would get home usually after dark and be exhausted only to wake up the next day and do it all over again. The only good day was Friday when we got paid and that made it all worth it. The tips we got weren’t bad too and we usually were fed well.

Pro tip, don’t get your movers pizza. They get it every other day.

I moved all day yesterday in the scorching heat, packing a large storage unit full to the brim, and still have shite to move/dispose of today and then need to clean up my house for the closing tomorrow. I would say moving is the pinnacle of first world problems. There is nothing worse.

Sitting here packing up our living room right now. Movers coming Sunday, unloading in Florida on Tuesday. I feel your pain. My first time moving in 25 years

And you just admitted you’re poor. You didn’t hire movers.

You just admitted you like to waste money and have no friends. When we moved about 30 min away, it was me and 3 buddies who did it for cost of beer/pizza for the day.

Only way I would justify moving costs is if it is over a long distance.

If you are over thirty you should hire movers. At that age no one wants crappy light beer and dominos for moving all your crap. if you can afford a new house you can afford movers. I'm not meaning have them come in and pack, but move the furniture. Plus I still get to drink beer in my new pad as tell them where the stuff goes. This is coming from a guy who has moved quite a few friends.

I put out a craigslist ad looking for movers at $10/hr but no one wants to work anymore apparently.

Because all you needed was 1 friend with a truck for the mattress, the dresser, big screen & sofa/futon. Everything else went into your luggage (garbage bags). Now that you own stuff, hell with moving; I'd rather just buy all new stuff.

You don't need to try -- it just comes so naturally to you.

I don’t know of a single person who has hired movers and thought it was a waste.

I’ve had professional movers twice. Both are in my top 5 purchases I’ve ever made in terms of value received.

I had to move twice basically, once from my home to an apartment, and then from the apartment to the house. My new house has a detached garage, so we moved all our furniture to the garage for the month we had to go to the apartment, then move from the detached garage to the house. Cost me about $5K total.
