What’s the dumbest thing you’ve heard a friend say they could do in the sports world?

The extra point thread reminded me of this.

I’m sure we’ve all sat around with friends and debated things like what sport would be the “easiest” to go pro in, how we could fare against pro athletes in various sports, what would be hardest to do in sports, etc.

My friend, who was a really good HS soccer player and played D2 soccer in college, was adamant that every college soccer player could go play CFB and be automatic from 40 yards or closer as a kicker. Automatic as in anything under 40 yards should be like making a layup - 99%+. I told him NFL kickers aren’t even that accurate and his theory doesn’t make any sense because he himself should just go be an NFL kicker in that situation and make a lot of money. Also, colleges would never struggle finding a reliable kicker. But he was convinced it should be that easy for a good soccer player.

A separate friend (who played JV HS basketball) thought he could average double digits in the NBA, with the caveat that he was the primary shot taker on the team. He’s a decent athlete but not a good basketball player or shooter, and around 5’10. He said throwing up enough shots, enough would go in. We argued that he would be guarded by the other teams best defender who would be taller, stronger, faster by a lot and wouldn’t be giving him space to throw up enough open shots for 15% or so to go in and get to double digits.

In college I had a friend I played tennis with pretty regularly. He was good, but not "get a scholarship to play in college" good. But he would constantly insist that there was no woman tennis player in the world, even the pros, that could beat him. Was certain of it.

Anytime we watch UFC my cousin, about 5’9 200, says he could whoop the all the 155lb and under UFC fighters arse. I try to explain to him that this is what these guys do for a living and would hit him about 5 times flush in the face before he threw once. Maybe in a phone booth he’d win, but CMON man

I used to think that if I got 500 plate appearances in MLB that I could luck into like 4 hits. I feel like that was pretty dumb.

I don't think I would even luck into 4 foul balls.

This is interesting. I think I'm on your side, as long as you can actually kick a soccer ball reasonably well.

If you can spot up a kick reasonably well and don't establish a pattern for where you target, I would have to think the goalie will just guess wrong a decent amount of times.

I had a buddy like that as well until my older brother who was a two time 2A state high school wrestling champion and wrestled JUCO for a year rag dolled him one night. He had about 40lbs on my brother and it wasn't even close.

Former poster Ron Mexico believes he could’ve been a D1 TE had he focused on football instead of soccer in HS. I still give him shite about it anytime I can.

Maybe not the same thing but slightly relevant. I played baseball growing up. Fastest pitching I ever saw live was 81-82 MPH fastballs.

I went to the Louisville slugger factory as a kid. They had a booth there that had a pitching machine tuned to like 99-100 MPH and you could stand right next to it. You basically couldn't even see the ball . You just saw a slight blur at the mouth of the machine and then a very loud thud on the padding it hit.

I just stood there and watched it in amazement that MLB hitters could hit this with any consistency at all.

I tell people I could make a WNBA roster tomorrow if they opened it up to true competition. I'm 6'6", 260 lbs, reasonably fit, terrible at basketball.

Knew an idiot that was adamant he could average at least 3.5 yards a carry behind an NFL O-Line. Keep in mind he was 5'11 210 and probably ran a 5.1 40

Hitting major league pitching has to be the hardest thing to do in sports.

I'll go ahead and lay my stupid claim out.

I can take any WNBA player 1 v 1.
