Standing IN line or ON line?

Had a long drive today and listened to a bunch of XM Radio. I heard three or four different people talk about standing ON line. I have always stood IN line. Is this something new to say or have I somehow been missing this?
How do you use the term?

In line, unless there is a line on the floor and I'm instructed to stand on it.

The brits use on instead of in for various stuff. So probably anglophiles trying to sound sophisticated. It can be quite a controversy....emphasis on the second syllable.

No one in the United States says on line and you already know this.

As far as the XM brag? This place taught me to call and bitch until I got the $8 a month rate. Not much of a flex at that price.

Wrong. It’s a northern thing. Everyone in NY says “on line”.

New Yorkers stand on line, because they are stupid.
Everyone else stands in line.
Everyone else stands in line.
