If you haven't come across this yet, take 45 minutes and give it a listen. Great stuff.

One thing that stood out to me was where they discussed the need to settle on a QB right now, as the offenses built around Jameis and Taysom will be completely different. Also, they mentioned watching Jameis run the same plays as Brees last year in practice and his reads were completely different then Brees. Said he was constantly chunking it deep, even against Cover 2.

Wondered the same thing when I read OP. I guess if it's deep down the middle, that's one of the areas you want to attack as long as you aren't hanging the ball in the air.

The other thought is in a C2, you are more likely to have 1 on 1 with a safety & WR; so as long as the safety isn't sitting there watching the ball/QB; it could be a good attack. But, chances are the safety is just sitting there waiting for arc to come forward and get it at the high point

I'm going to listen later but yeah you can read it two ways...

1) Brees was on a deep throw pitch count and it's nice to see Winston able to sling it more often

OR

2) Winston is not making the right reads and he's throwing it deep even when he shouldn't.

They said he would throw deep on a ton of his throws, but 2 out of 3 wouldn't drop anywhere near a receiver.

Yeah, they don't think he will be able to resist those deep throws....though, he didn't know the offense well yet. Said he made a throw in practice that was one of the best throws they had ever seen.

Whatever I watched Brady throw a bunch deep he shouldn’t have last season. Take some shots.

Take snap.
Fail to read the defense.
Throw long.
Repeat.

I mean you have no idea whether a full offseason focused on working with him will make a difference. I’d be willing to bet a large sum of money that Jameis has his most efficient season of his career this year.

Considering he set the bar near the fricking floor, way to go out on a huge limb. Its not like jameis has passed for 72.7% in his career previously.

bad for completed passes

great for DBs to get lots of interceptions

hell winston might actually throw 50 picks if they keep him at QB

Going to be hard to take the gun slinger out of jameis.

There is a reason payton wanted to move up for mac jones.

When I play Madden, I lick my chops against cover 2. I always have a slot WR running a deep post to occupy the safeties and I have my 2 outside guys run streak routes. Most of the time, you can get a lot of cheap long TD’s against Cover 2 if you have the right routes setup.

However, this isn’t Madden and throwing deep against Cover 2 is a bad idea 90% of the time. You really have to have the right combination of routes setup for it to work.

So, in short, I’d say Jameis mostly throwing deep against Cover 2 is mostly a bad thing. But perhaps, the guy was just bored on the bench and wanted to have some fun with his reps since he almost never played in games.

JW said before learning under Brees, he tried to make every pass a “touchdown”. Said he now realizes that sometimes just taking what the defense gives you is ok. Now I don’t know if he can change or said that before/after all those deep throws mentioned above.
