Here's what you do if a cop pulls you over:

*Don't get out of the car unless the officer tells you to

*Put your hands on the steering wheel so the officer can see your hands

*Do what the officer tells you to do

*Be polite. Say yes sir and no sir

*Don't argue with the officer. If he's wrong, go to court and make your case.

My mom told me that (dad didn't have a lot to say)

I told our kids the same things.

I'm not blaming the 20 year old in Minnesota for his death, but he did at the very least contribute to his own death by being stupid.

And no, being stupid shouldn't mean you get killed by a cop, but every adult knows that life isn't fair.

Teach your kids to improve their odds of coming out unscathed when they interact with the police

It’s not black/white.

Plenty of black families have that conversation.

It’s responsible parenting vs wreckless child endangerment and it plagues rural meth communities as much as urban innercities.

I think 'the talk" that most blacks have with their children is the exact opposite of that.

at least the ones who get shot by police.

I am sure they tell their kids that they can do whatever they want to not cooperate with the police. that the police are to be snubbed and mocked.

That "talk" they are really having is getting their kids killed - but they sometime rake in the big $$$ when it happens.

Act like a pro and the cops will let you go.

Act like a loser and you get put in the cruiser.

I've been telling anyone who would listen that black parents have been having the wrong "talk" with their children for at least three decades now, and foolishly sending them out to slaughter .

In a lot of ways this is true but in the context of acting a fool with the police it is absolutely not true.

Dad sat me down at 14. You started driving at 15 back then. Gave me the talk.

It’s not the opposite. It doesn’t exist.

60 something percent grow up without a father and most are raised by an exhausted grandmother

I work with a number of young people of various minorities and it seems the prevalent idea they are taught is that police want a reason to hurt/kill them. Stories of their encounters and their friends' encounters with police are ridden with fear and panic.

Even simple traffic stop stories show a lack of rational thought. Just fear and panic. Its sad really.

My uncle was a cop. Before me or brother ever started driving, he sat us down and told us the following --

- Always say "Yes sir" and "No sir" even if he is an a$$ and/or is younger than you

- Always keep your hand in plain sight on the steering wheel at 10 and 2

- UNDERSTAND that this is a scary situation for any cop coming up to a car because he has no idea who you are or what you may have hidden that he can't see

- Always ask permission to move your hands and let him know exactly where you are going with your hand and what you are getting

- NEVER argue with a cop. If he tells you you were going 90 in a 25 and you KNOW (and, NOW, even have proof) that you were only going 24 just say you didn't realize it and take your ticket

- During the entire process treat him with respect even if he doesn't treat you with respect

With respect to the last one, he told us that if we behaved ourselves even when the cop didn't, he (my uncle the cop) would have a much better chance of talking to the cop and getting the ticket fixed.

He left us with this – just remember that cops are just regular normal human beings. While it is true that some think that they're God with a badge, the vast majority are just trying to get by. Just like everyone else they have their good days and bad days. You might run into one that just got in a fight with his wife and found out she was cheating on him. Keep that in mind when you’re doing your best to treat him with respect and he's being an a$$hole.

I’m sure that there are things I’ve left out, but those were the main points.

Is it really foolish if they get millions and still have 3 kids after this happens? I'm starting to think it's willful.

Unpleasant interactions with police in any circumstance sucks. Complying with police used to be an elementary concept universally agreed upon by American society. Arguing and spasticitly resisting with cops just doesn’t work out well. There’s nothing wrong with just shutting up and handling your shite in court like a man if you have actually been wronged. Avoiding escalation with cops is so damn simple.

This is all decent advice, but I would also advise anyone pulled over to at least audio record, but preferably video record the interaction.

The entire encounter needs to be documented by a 3rd party (phone, dash cam, etc). There are entirely too many consensual interactions with police that aren't properly documented. Dont count on police to document the situation.

Good idea.

I'll make a quick grab for my phone in the drivers seat next time.

An underlying problem is the fact that too many black boys grow up without a male disciplinarian.

They can’t handle no.

The first thing you see in the aftermath are black women sayin their baby wouldn’t do that and had to be a victim.
Well, that was his upbringing too.

Recipe for disaster.

The more I see these situations take place, the more I'm considering installing a dash cam in my car, my wife's car, and my kid's car. When the shite hits the fan, I don't trust anybody to not try to cover up their dirty mess when they frick up. I can tell you personally, that I won't do a damn thing that will get me shot by the police.
