One other thing I found about about why Kia and Hyundai are “cheap” is that they do not have to outsource for metal. Apparently it is very abundant in Korea.

When we bought our new suv - I really loved the Honda Pilot - but it just wasn’t enough room for us. The Toyota Highlander was a nice test drive too. We test drove the Kia as well.

But we bought a Chevrolet Traverse bc it was the roomiest, and not over $40K

Pilot is a good car. The fold down elbow rests are really stupid though.

Telluride (might be too big, also it's a Kia)

The Kia argument is just dumb at the point they have been at tops of reliability for a few years now.

Also look at the Hyundai Palasade as it’s the same car basically as the Telluride

Also under $50K you can grab a entry level Genesis GV80 which will give you a rear wheel drive platform and much better overall quality. Also it just saved Tigers life.

Driven Toyota my entire life...I was hesitant about the telluride because it’s a Kia. This thing is miles better than Toyota. My only regret is not purchasing it earlier. I went with the SX nightfall. You will not be disappointed. There’s a reason it has won a ton of awards...

Press a button on the telluride vs a Lexus GX. Telluride buttons feel cheap. Different level of fit and finish. I would rather have a car run 200k miles with only oils changes/brakes, than risk a higher cost breakdown.

had an Army buddy who was an Apache pilot. He and his wife drove Kias exclusively.

I own 3 KIAs.

Our 2015 Sorento still looks/runs great. We have two big dogs (100 lbs, 75 lbs), and they fit comfortably in back (no 3rd row seat). Very quiet ride. Only issue was a door handle broke at about 15K miles. Dealer had it fixed in an hour.

You can have a decked-out Sorento for $43K plus tax, tag, title.

I love my 4Runner Limited with 3rd row that folds down in the trunk. If you're looking at the Lexus might as well check that out too.

eta: but for mom life, there are some annoyances, like no remote start, and you have to manually open the trunk which is just in this day and age. The entertainment system is meh. They might have fixed these issues by now, as mine is a 2019 model. Otherwise it's a great car

I have a 2015 and it has remote start, kind of weird a 2019 doesn’t

For 2020, the 4Runner got CarPlay, a larger infotainment screen, adaptive cruise, automatic emergency braking, etc. but it still doesn’t have blind spot monitor or automatic opening/closing rear hatch.

The rear hatch wouldn’t bother me. But the blind spot monitor is a handy feature to be missing.

Not the best looking vehicle, but the Buick Enclave feels luxury AF inside and drives real nice.

frick a BMW. My wife’s (no pics) was a piece of shite

My daughters (also no pics) was the worst vehicle I have ever owned. Worse than my first car (84 Oldsmobile Hurst).

That X5 would break down more often than she would have to stop for gas.

Never again. Ever. Like if someone gave me one I would not accept it.

My wife looked at both of these and Mercedes won out by a mile but the Lexus IS much closer to your budget.

If he wants a 350 hes paying either for bare minimum or fully loaded for 50-52k. Otherwise yes an IS or even an ES is more in range.

Or he can just get the new NX which is under 50k.

Just bought a 2018 for the wife- loaded out 32k miles and it was $33. 2018 and 19 have a 6 year/72k mile warranty and you get an additional year/12k if it’s certified. They dropped it to 4yr/50k in 2020.

Really comfortable ride, middle seats move back so there’s plenty of room, tons of cargo space, and the Fender sound system (only available in the SEL premium) is bad arse

Look into a Honda Pilot. Those are pretty nice and not too exoensive.
