The ethics of doctors handing out meds as suckers at the end of a visit

I think it pretty much goes without saying that we have become an extremely drugged up society. There is a drug for pretty much anything you can imagine, and if you go to a doctor, they’ll find one to fit you.
Have attention issues? Got ya covered.
Feeling down? Pop this in your mouth
Having multiple issues? Take this, and then take this to counteract the effects of that and this.
You just have to wonder the ethics behind drugging up our problems instead of actually learning to overcome and/or live with our problems or struggles in life.
I remember as a kid having what today would most surely be labeled ADD, but we didn’t know what that was. I had a lot of problems in staying focused in class and when reading, getting lost in class, and reading and re-reading things over and over in order to retain it. SO, the folks sent me to a class to learn how to stay focused when reading and listening. After taking the class things drastically improved. I still had my struggles, but overall I learned how to deal with it, life got more manageable, and my performance improved.
Now, if I was simply given a pill and never learned how to overcome it, i would be forever hitched to the pill for the rest of my life, and while that may serve the doctors and pharmaceutical industry, it certainly does me no favors, and so here is where the ethics comes into play here, how crippling people by drugs over people learning how to deal with life and overcome obstacles affects society and the individual, if no other way than simply their pocket book.
This isn’t intended as an attack on people struggling, but rather the ethics behind doing this to society. If people use these pills as a means of learning how to deal with it by means of counseling and/or classes, and then eventually get off of it, that’s great, but we all know that’s not what is going on here overall. Most are just becoming dependent upon pills to live life, and I don’t see how that is a net positive for anyone besides those making a living off of it.

My son's doctor has a box of suckers on the way out, and I snag a couple each time.

It's doctors and patients faults. No one wants to put in any effort to improve.
50 lbs overweight with high blood pressure? Take a pill, don't lose weight.
This country focuses on treating the sick, not preventing getting sick. It's arse backwards logic.

Pineapple was rare.
Good for another reason too.
If you have to ask why, you are already too late for Supper.

Do kids still treat the Indian shooting a bow as “lucky” on Dum-Dum wrappers? Or has that been #Canceled?

I agree that some issues are better treated without medication, but sometimes a pill is what works the best. I tried everything under the sun for over two years before going on migraine medication to treat chronic migraines. Diets, exercises, sleep changes, whatever else. I didn't want to be one of those people who was reliant on a pill every day. My neurologist convinced me to try some medication, and it has been life changing.

You're absolutely right. I read a depressing study a few weeks ago. I will find the data later and come back and update but it states Americans average over 4.5 prescriptions taken daily per person. In 1993 it was something like 2.6 prescriptions per person.
Think about that - every man, woman and child in this country is taking that many pills. So for every person like me, who is not on any prescription medication, there is a person who is taking nine pills a day.
You're completely right in that no one wants to do hard work. They want a pill to take everything away. A decade ago I had high blood pressure from being 30 lbs overweight. I lost the weight and kept it off and guess what-The high blood pressure went away.

People get shot taking too long in the drive thru at the fast food joints.
The OT's weekly thread is overdue on taking longer than 15 seconds at a cash register because of a) writing a check, or, b) paying cash including change.
Same mentality towards medical issues.
I have a structured settlement and I need cash now! Except it's, "I have a medical issue and I need cured now!"
About time for the monthly thread on crowded waiting rooms, extended wait times by inconsiderate staff, etc., regarding going to a Dr.'s office. Can't everyone else have their emergencies at a more convenient time for me?

The myth when I was a kid was that the star means you got a free sucker.
And the suckers at my son's doc are the generic ones. Not Dumdums, Tootsie Roll Pops, etc. These:

Saf-T-Pops. Not generic, brand name goodness. My favorite flavor is red.

also with patient satisfaction/hospital admin quality measures etc the doc's hand is somewhat forced. everyone wants to feel like the doc "did something" for them.
whats the over/under on how many times OP has shouted "get off my lawn"?
