Seven Samurai because it influenced all these westerns

Is The Outlaw Josey Wales The Greatest Western Of All Time?
Yes.

Silverado as the best modern western; Liberty Valance, Shane, the Searchers, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon are all top notch classics in the genre. My favorite though, The Magnificent Seven just because those were some if my all-time favorite actors.

I don’t like rude behavior in a man. I won’t tolerate it.

Many of the best have been mentioned, but I’m going to show some love to The Long Riders. One of my favorite movies.

The Searchers is the greatest, but OJW and Unforgiven are maybe a count hair away. I give it to The Searchers simply because of the way it was shot. You get a lot of those big vista shots of the west in many of the key scenes. The cabin silhouette shot of John Wayne with monument valley opening up is an all time classic shot. Otherwise , I could watch those three and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence on a non stop loop everyday.
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance...I could watch it every day.

Sometimes I think we need more institutions for retards.
As for a serious answer; I'd say it's a tough decision between the big ones named here. The Searchers, Outlaw Josey Wales, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Unforgiven, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, Shane....
Those are all top tier movies in every way.
For me, I have to split them out by time.
For "older" movies, I think The Searchers and She Wore A Yellow Ribbon are GOAT.
For "modern", it's Unforgiven hands down.

I totally agree with you about Tombstone. It's a pretty hokey movie. I do not agree with the comp to Goodfellas. That's an all timer baw.
Ditto. Tombstone has a collection of Hollywood pretty boys posing and re-enacting a collection of western cliches. If you turn off the dialogue, it looks like a comedy.
Tombstone is quite possibly the faggiest western I have ever seen.
But I also disagree with the OP. Clint Eastwood did star in the greatest western ever made, but it is called The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

For me, it’s Josey Wales and the Good the Bad and the Ugly one and two. And it’s close.
I’m just a dyed-in-the-wool Eastwood guy when it comes to Westerns. I know I’m biased. But I also know that even if you disagree, it’s not by much.
The Outlaw Josey Wales was one of the best movies of the 70’s, period.

So difficult to choose but I’d have to go with Once Upon a Time in the West. The film’s plot, musical score, and its nostalgia for the West put it at the top for me.

Lonesome Dove, unless it’s disqualified for transcending the Western genre and general awesomeness

I think of this one as the Goodfellas of westerns.
Big cast, big hype, average movie.
I'm not sure if you're being downvoted for ripping Tombstone or Goodfellas.
