Can you explain how this mRNA vaccine can prevent you from getting the virus when antibodies from actually contracting the virus can’t do the same thing? Meaning people who have gotten the virus can contract it a second time but the ones who receive the vaccine cannot initially get it?

I’ve never received an answer for this question and I’ve been hoping someone can answer for me.

Nothing in the universe can prevent the virus from entering your body. What antibodies from both the vaccine and natural infection do is fight the infection before the virus attacks your body and replicates

When herd immunity is reached in communities, the vaccine “dies out” because it can no longer replicate

My understanding is that there's no guarantee you can't contract the virus again whether you get the vaccine or you contract the virus naturally. In fact, you probably can, as immunity is estimated at ~3-4 months IIRC, but it should be much more mild should you contract it again, similar to how many people get milder flu infections if they got the flu shot.

To those concerned about the safety of the new vaccine:

The mRNA is just the spike protein of the virus, meaning it can't infect but it gives your body a chance to activate antibodies for the virus. mRNA is new in human trials but has been studied for decades, including in animals, so confidence in safety and efficacy is quite high.

I don't think it's completely irrational to be hesitant to take a rushed vaccine but I suggest reading into what it is and how it works to understand why it's pretty low-risk and lower risk than all of the long-term issues COVID has been shown to cause in some people, even healthy people.

If I take the vaccine, how am I supposed to get 2 weeks off of work for the sniffles?

There is not a single logical reason someone into health and fitness should get the vaccine.

Its not logical to want to take something that has a better chance to keep you healthy and well?

I saw a lot of people in the hospital today who might disagree with you.

Pride a couple of questions.

1) has the length of antobody life in covid patients been further studied? I mean I’m sure it has but are they still saying 3 months likely?

2) when would you expect science to be able to tell us if this will be a yearly vaccine that needs to be repeated

Thanks — not sure you can answer but surely someone can!

You probably also think there is no reason to wear a mask, no reason to shut down, etc. The reason to get it is to stop the spread of the virus so we can get back to normal. If we don't stop the spread of the virus, you are going to keep complaining about wearing a mask a lot longer than you need to. I don't blame anyone for not taking the vaccine, but you can't say there's no reason for you to take it. There's a great reason.

Received my second dose without symptoms or discomfort. There are still tons of very sick people in the hospital with Covid. I definitely recommend getting the vaccine if you are able.

Working in healthcare, I know a large number of people who have received the vaccine. It’s just anecdotal, but everyone I know of so far who has had symptoms (fever, headache, malaise) after receiving the vaccine has previously tested positive for the virus.

I got the second dose last Tuesday around 0900. Around 2100 that night I started feeling pretty damn bad with headache, body aches, and chills. It lasted a solid 24 hours and improved rapidly after those 24 hours. I felt great the next morning. I had zero problems with the first dose and I have never had COVID. I don't regret getting it, but there are side effects, and from what I have heard from others that have received the second dose, what I experienced is not uncommon after the second dose. I could barely get out of bed the day after receiving my second dose. I still think it's a good idea for most people to get it, but just know that it's very possible to feel bad after - especially after that second dose.

But if you don’t take the vaccine, you are going by your gut and emotion, not data.
What percentage of America has died from Covid and Covid alone? Covid data is known for not being particularly reliable.

If it was die or be perfectly fine, that would be all fine and well. Plenty of people are dealing with prolonged recovery and some with more severe long-hauler symptoms. That's actually quite a bit similar to polio. Polio didn't kill large swaths of people but it did cripple quite a few children.

I don't have time for all that. I'll happily take my vaccine at the end of the month. And if the vaccine is successful, look forward to how that will advance mRNA cancer research (which has been around for a decade or better).

I am a republican and was skeptical of the severity of the virus at the beginning. I am also a physician. I can promise you that the virus itself has killed a lot of people. I have seen them die. I am against mass shutdowns and mask-shaming, but the virus is real and dangerous. Take it or don't take it, but the vaccine was developed by scientists in response to a deadly virus and is not a political tool of control or submission.

What is the current projection for how long it will take to get the vaccine distributed to everyone who wants to take it?

I have this internal battle whether or not I will get it when I am up for it. The thought of getting the vaccine before others who might need it doesn't sit well with me.

I honestly don’t know more than anyone else when it comes to the speed of the rollout. It seems to be going pretty well where I’m at in Alabama.

I don’t think anyone should feel guilty about receiving the vaccine. I understand your reservations; I felt similar, being relatively young and healthy. But, we need people to get vaccinated if we are ever going to get past this, so if you or anyone else is offered the vaccine, I think you are in the right to accept it if you so wish.
