I have a few friends who will be after 30+ years of investing.

I'm having my portfolio audited next week and it might be time to move into tangibles and more secure money markets.

At worst I switch positions to different markets

Basically I’m tech heavy right now. May start more positions in travel heavy stocks soon.

Should we have cashed out when it hit 20k? 25k?

I don't know honestly just this came up in a breakfast conversation with a small group recently like, Thursday?

I am not sure why the down votes are happening?

I have asked the question because these guys have 7 figure portfolios.

Is it unreasonable?

Why would a person do this? Maybe if a retired person presently needed the cash due a desperate situation.

What is the significance of 30K? Why that number?

In general trying to time major market moves is a fool's errand.

The only people who should "cash out" are older people and I believe you're supposed to gradually move your funds into lower risk vehicles as you get older.

Already did last week. Parked it in a money market until the future of the country becomes clearer.

Don't really see the market going anywhere sustainable until then.

Can't imagine any scenario where it makes sense to "cash out." If you want to rebalance, fine, But cash out, no. Having said that, I don't think we are going to see 30k anytime soon.

And do what with the money? The dividends on stocks generate more income than interest bearing securities, most of which are paying close to zero.

I'm 4 years from a planned retirement. I'm up 20% this year overall, after being down 20% in May. Makes me nervous. I wanted 4 more years of a businessman in the white house, but we are back to career politicians running everything.

If you're at or near retirement, it makes lots of sense to move your money into safer investments.

If you're years from retirement, you're leaving money on the table.

Sold everything this morning. Putting half in the mattress and the rest buried in mason jars in the backyard

I have never seen so much interest for something quite so downvoted?

I can only surmise that the goals of these few and the bulk of amassed holdings made this a timely exit. I doubt they return into the market and work on ways to give it all away.

My situation is not that deep and I will not be exiting at this time. With what's coming at some point it's anybody's guess?

This stated I cant wait to share the gaggle of opined views this thread has presented with the group. (sic)

30k seems like a very arbitrary number.

To answer your question - HELL NO.
