Seems like both of you left your animals unattended outside, so I imagine both of you would be at fault. Although I'm not sure what "at fault" means in this scenario...it's not like someone owes someone else damages or anything.

Nobody at fault. If the dogs got out and killed a cat in someone's yard that would be another thing.

If you don't want your pet being killed do not let it roam free.

No one is at fault. It was a cat.

No fault. That's speciesist. Why can cats roam free but not dogs?

I think "often" sways it a lot against the dog owner. Cat may be out but the cat didn't kill a dog. If the dog owner knew they got out often, knew they were a threat to other animals and did not property contain them then they are at fault.

Cat kills a prize parrot that Homeowner C leaves outside, then it is a different story.

Outdoor cats lead a risky existence. If you have one, you should always be prepared for the end to come suddenly. By virtue of having an outside cat, you can’t claim that you’re not putting it in danger every day. You are. But that’s just how it is.

But the two dogs left their property and killed it in a neighbor’s yard. The dogs are responsible for the death of the cat, and the neighborhood has a reasonable expectation that the dogs in its neighborhood shouldn’t be killing cats. That being said, what can be done? It wasn’t on the cat owner’s property.

I think if I was the cat owner, I would approach the dogs’ owners and ask them what they think about all of this, and if they are willing to make some restitution for the loss of the cat, such as halving my adoption fee for a new cat or whatever. If the dog owner doesn’t want to work with me like an honorable person, then I would report the dogs’ killing to animal control, and it goes on their record. If they kill two domesticated animals within three years, they are classified as dangerous animals by law in Louisiana.

Unsportsmanlike conduct on the offense, dog #1 and #2, unsportsmanlike conduct on the defense, cat #1, those penalties offset, replay 3rd down.

I know cats are cheap, but starting up with a cat isn’t always cheap if you’re a responsible owner. Shots/spaying/registering, etc. I wouldn’t ask the world of the dog owner, really. Just a token of acknowledgment here. Work with me. That’s what I’m saying.
