There are huge celebrations on the streets tonight in South America... People for Bernie Sanders likes it

From @lbvalenz

Chile will have a new Constitution, closing a cycle that began with the US sponsored military coup of September 11, 1973. Dedicated to Nixon and Kissinger who certainly will hear the news ??#PlebiscitoChile
IIRC Kissinger is still alive

Just last week, the socialist party won in Bolivia in an election with 88% turnout

Well, around last year there were protests that stemmed from higher public transportation prices

Then it blew up into similar protests that are akin to the dumbfrickery we have suffered since beginning of summer. Low pensions, poor public education, and subpar public health care.

I’m sure they’ll want more government to fix this shite.

Chile knows who butters their bread. All they have to do is count the yearly port calls by the US Navy.

I am guessing the 78% of Chileans doing what they want for their country to erase the years of a brutal and corrupt dictatorship aren't taking enough account what American Pinochet supporters think.

The problem with the change in govt will be the demographic changes themselves, the people dont just stay put. Venezuela is an example.

Living here in Trinidad, just miles from the coast of Venezuela, and our own govt being sympathetic to the people of Venezuela, we have probably taken in 100K. In the beginning it was the rich, mobile. The people who did not have hard assets, like factories, bricks and mortar, in Venezuela, along with the educated middle class. Next came the poor hard working people, who simply wanted a job (we have no social safety net for refugees here). Now we see the criminal element more often (I guess there is nothing left to steal in Venezuela anymore).

When maduro is finally gone, there will be no middle class educated people to run the economy of the country. They live in Miami, Trinidad, London, they got married had a couple of kids, they arent going back. It means the country is left with, very wealthy factory owners, a corrupt govt, and a huge population of poor people. depending on the govt.

A sad day in history. Few men fought communism with the tenacity of Pinochet

And I am sure he remembers The Domino theory. With China's influence in the economies in South America, we live in interesting times.

First they build islands in S China Sea. Then they militarize them. Then they get involved in Africa and South America. This is not to say that China is involved in Chile's "constitutional crisis", but I believe this does not upset them.

ETA: I think they are in Trinidad as well, building a hospital. Hope trinidadtiger checks in.

So....how will the environmental socialist ( anti oil + socialists) reconcile this when their beloved economic system jacks up the production of their anti oil system. When lithium production (profits) are "nationalized" and production is reduced...who is going to bearb the blame and wrath of the green socialist groups (squad)

Good. I fully support them all renouncing their American citizenship and moving to Chili to help them implement socialism there. Let them prove to the USA that socialism will actually work this time.

This proves the cold war was futile and folks like Murray Rothbard were correct. If I'm Chilean, Uruguay is more appealing at this point.

Democracy is a horrible system.
